Descendants of John Johnson

61. ELIZABETH ANN "BETSEY"23 JOHNSON (PLEASANT SMITH22, JAMES SR.21, BENJAMIN20, JOHN19, JAMES18 JOHNSTON, THOMAS17, JOHN16, GEORGE15, WILLIAM14, JAMES13, WILLIAM12, ALEXANDER11 DEJOHNSTONE, GILBERT JR.10, GILBERT SR.9, JOHN8, STEPHEN7, ADAM6 JOHNSTON, GILBERT5 DEJOHNSTON, THOMAS4 JOHNSON, GILBERT3 DEJOHNSTON, JOHN SON OF2 UHTRED, UHTRED OF1 TYNDALE) was born 20 Jan 1820 in Wayne Co.,Kentucky, and died 15 Jan 1913 in Flippin,Marion Co.,Arkansas. She married (1) ANDREW R. JOHNSON Abt. 1839. He was born Bet. 1792 - 1825 in Virginia. She married (2) HENRY PLEASANT GIBSON 21 Oct 1851 in Wayne Co.,Kentucky. He was born Abt. 1799 in Tennessee, and died Bef. 1880.

Notes for E
Elizabeth was married 1st to Andrew Johnson and had 3 children. 21 Oct 1851, Elizabeth married 2 nd to Henry Plesant Gibson in Wayne County, Kentucky. There were 5 sons born of this marriage. After Henry's death, Elizabeth Ann lived with youngest son Johnson in Wayne Co KY from about 1882 thru 1888. In 1890, it is believed that she travelled with her widower son Fleming Campbell Gibson 1853-1897, from Kentucky to Arkansas and helped to look after his small children. It wasn't until after she'd relocated to Arkansas that she finally sold the property the she and Henry had owned in Kentucky. There had been some difficulty in clearing the title because the land was purchased in the name of Henry Gipson and sold in the name of Henry Gibson. Neither Henry or Elizabeth knew how to read or write and their names were misspelled with E(sen) and P(Gip) on many records. Elizabeth spent the last years of her life with her son John, near Flippen Arkansas. Gravestone in Flippin Cemetery of Marion County Arkansas reads "Betsy A. Gibson, mother, Jan 20 1820 - Jan 15 1913".

Henry Pleasant Gibson served as a Militia Pvt in War of 1812. (Kentucky Soldiers of the War of 1812, Library of Congress R973-52). Think he didn't apply for benefits until after 1851 because his wife's name is shown as Elizabeth Ann Bolen (his 2nd wife). Henry and his 1st wife were in Harlan Co (later Knox Co) KY in 1820. They were living adjacent to his father, Ruben. They had 8 kids by 1840 (6 females and 2 males).

1830 census Harlan County Kentucky, Two of Henry's brothers, William and Jesse, and his mother Henrietta are living adjacent to him.

28 June 1841, Henry bought 50 acres land in Knox County, Kentucky, on Yellow Creek.
17 Aug 1847, Deed Book E, p.312, Knox County, Kentucky, Henry sold to Cole.

First wife (or 2nd) is thought to have died about 1849. Henry was alone when the 1850 census was taken and was listed with 10 kids, aged 1 to 24. Don't know his total issue. Some listed children may have been orphaned relatives.

Henry, age 56, married in Wayne County, Kentucky, on the 21st of October 1851 to Elizabeth Ann Bolen, age 31, the widow of Andrew Johnson. "Betsey Ann" had 3 children from her former marriage.

9 Jan 1868. Deed Book 23, p.21, Pulaski Co KY, Henry & Elizabeth bought 50 acres land on Fishing Creek, under the name of Gipson, from Bishop. Their neighbor by name of Marcum financed $275.00 by 2 notes of 1 & 2 yr duration. They had difficulty paying the note & it wasn't until 1874 that the farm was finally paid for.

20 Aug 1870. Deed Book 23, p.550, Pulaski Co KY, from Henry and Elizabeth Gibson to Cloyd. (Note secured by Deed of Trust?)

When census was taken in Pulaski Co KY in 1870, family #105, Henry said his age was 71, a farmer, and held property worth $602. Residing in same household was Eliz. A. 49, Polly J. Garland 20, Esom E. Bolen 18 (some researchers think that Esom was 28), Fleming C. Gibson 16, Archibald 14, John M. 12, Samuel 9, Johnson 6, Mary A. Garland 2.

20 Feb 1874, Deed Book 25, p.379, Pulaski Co KY, from Cloyd to Henry and Elizabeth Gibson. (Note Paid?)

2 Jan 1884, Elizabeth Gibson (now a widow) sold land to Marcum.

6 April 1890, Pulaski County, Kentucky, Corrected Deed, from Elizabeth Gipson to Marcum.

Neither Henry or Elizabeth knew how to read and write and they didn't know that their name was misspelled on legal documents.

When Henry's son, Fleming Campbell Gibson, married William Ann Cowan in 1880, he gave information that his father Henry was born in Tennessee, but it may have been Virginia.

Notes for M
She was known to her grandfather, James Johnson, Sr., as "Polly Maria." He addressed her by this name in his will, dated 1833. However, her proper name was Mary Mariah, according to "Hinds in Kentucky and Missouri." This is very probable as "Polly" was a very common nickname for Mary during this period of time.

On September 1, 1847 John S. Wray paid $51.50 to Zachariah B. Ford and Polly Mariah, his wife, late Polly Mariah Johnson, granddaughter of Joseph Hinds, dec'd, for "their 1/3 part of 1/14th undivided interest to a tract of 200 acres on which said Hinds lived at the time of his death and whereon said Wray now lives". (Bk K, pgs 80-81)

Later on June 26, 1852 John S. Wray paid $100 to Zachariah B. Ford and Mary Mariah Ford, his wife, of Andrew Co., Missouri for two undivided thirds of a tract of land on the waters of Cumberland River surveyed by Pleasant S. Johnson, bounded by the lands of J. C. Flinn, Archibald Hinds, John S. Wray, and Walter Emerson, and containing 200 acres. One of the thirds descended to Mary Mariah Ford, late Johnson, from her father Pleasant S. Johnson, dec'd, and the other third was purchased from Elizabeth A. Johnson, who was also a daughter and heir of the said Pleasant S. Johnson, dec'd. (Bk L, pg 540)

Zachariah Berriman Ford was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky. He moved to Wayne County as a lad and grew to manhood. He was married in 1845 to Polly Mariah Johnson. In 1848, with his father, he came to Missouri. They settled in Andrew County, two miles west of Savannah.

He died on January 30, 1906 at 8:40 a.m. He survived his wife, and three children--Mrs. Robert Merritt, Mrs. Edward Smith, and a son Zachariah.

--Obituary from the "Savannah Reporter," February 2, 1906

(There were three children in the family. They arrived late in life and it is very possible that they were adopted. In the Census of 1900, she indicated that she had not given birth to any children. Therefore, either the census taker entered this information in error, or the children were adopted.)
