2. PETER2 MCKENNA (JOHN1) was born Jan 03, 1847 in New York City, and died Jan 28, 1918 in Three miles north of Maquon, Illinois in Knox County. He married MATILDA SCOTT Sep 16, 1880 in Knox County, daughter of JAMES SCOTT and SARA HARSHBARGER. She was born Mar 15, 1860 in Haw Creek Township near Gilson, Illinois in Knox County, and died 1938.

The following information came from his obituary (provided by Rollin P. Haynes) in either a Galesburg, Ilinois or a Knoxville, Ilinois newspaper:

Peter McKenna, the 13th child of John and Margaret McKenna, was born in the city of New York January 3rd, 1847 and passed away at his home 3 miles north of Maquon January 28th 1918, at about 4:30 pm. He was aged 71 years and 25 days. He had been in failing health for several years and 2 months ago was stricken with pneumonia and other complications.
      Mr. McKenna received his education in New York City and later entered the Union Navy where he served from 1861-1863 in the Civil War, taking an active part in a number of engagements. After the close of the Civil War he came west and settled near White Hall in Greene County Illinois, August 8th, 1876, later coming to Knox County Illinois where he married Matilda Jane Scott on September 16th, 1880.
      To this union were born 5 children, 2 of whom, Thomas and William, having previously answered the summons. There remains to mourn his loss, his wife, 3 children( George, Mrs. Lavena Haynes, and Mrs. Hilda Rambo) all of Maquon, a sister, and 5 grandchildren.
      He was affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of London Mills, Illinois for 27 years, having received a medal for 25 years of membership. He was also a member of the Masonic Order.
      Funeral services were held in the U. B. Church at Gilson, Illinois at 11:00am by the Reverend M. A. Berger of Maquon, Illinois. Burial was in the Gilson Cemetery at Gilson, Illinois.


      Rollin P. Haynes (Grandson of Peter McKenna) also provided the following information: Peter McKenna was a drummer boy in the Civil War for the Union Navy. Rollin P. Haynes gave the drumsticks Peter McKenna used to Craig McKenna (Great Great Grandson of Peter McKenna). A relative of Peter's was employed as a referee for pro-fights in New York.

ATILDA SCOTT:
The following information came from Matilda's obituary in either a Galesburg, Illinois newspaper or a Knoxville, Illinois newspaper:

Funeral services for Mrs. Peter McKenna, 78, who died in her home here after a few days illness, were held Sunday afternoon in the Klinck mortuary by the Rev. J. H. Clarke. Burial was in the Gilson cemetery( Gilson, Illinois). Matilda Jane Scott was born on March 15, 1860, in Haw Creek township near Gilson, Illinois and attended the country schools. She was married when 20 years of age to Peter McKenna. To this union 5 children were born, 2 of whom preceded her in death, one in infancy, the other in young manhood. Her husband also passed away, in 1918. A few months later she moved to Knoxville, where she had since resided. She spent most of January with her sister, and brother, having gone to her sister's before Christmas. She returned to her home Jan. 24. Surviving are a son, George, of Maquon; 2 daughters, Mrs. Lavena Haynes Rickord of Knoxville, and Mrs. Hilda Foster of Indiana; 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
