Notes for William Luke Haynie:
William Luke Haynie, M.D. , wife Sara Rosalie and children moved from Bowersville, Georgia near Hartwell about 1897 to Mallorysville, Georgia. The family and all their belongings were loaded into wagons and pulled by oxen taking over a week to make their way to their new home, averaging about ten miles a day. Bowersville and Mallorysville aren't very far apart but in those days with no paved roads or bridges, it was slow going with six children under the age of twelve and having to stop and make camp and fix meals along the way.

Dr. Haynie is buried at Independence Methodist Churchyard in Tignall, Wilkes County, Georgia. He was a physician, a surgeon and a farmer. He had his own brick building with his office and pharmacy open to the folks of Wilkes County. Inscription on his tombstone "He did good to his country. His toils are past, his work is done, he fought the fight, his victory won. " There is a Masonic emblem on his tombstone (Most of the Haynie men were Masons.) He had graduated from the Cincinnati College of Physicians and Surgeons. His diploma, actually on a real piece of 'sheepskin' has dissappeard along the way as have other things he had used in his medical services.
