Jacob Roth Killed by Indians
Ancestor is a victim of the hazards that existed on the harsh Colonial Frontier.
The following chronology outlines some historical facts pertaining to Conrad
Roth’s father, Jacob Roth, and his death by the Indians.
-- Jacob Roth (my 5th grgrandfather), came to America on the ship "Dragon".
arriving at Philadelphia Sept. 26, 1749. This ship had "Foreigners from
Palatinate and Zwiebrucken". A friend, George Hartlieb, was a fellow passenger
on this voyage from Germany.
-- Jacob settled in Plainfield Twp., Northampton Co., and his son Conrad
was born August 27, 1752. His god-father was Conrad Bittenbender.
--The names of Jacob Roth, George Hartlieb, and Conrad Bittenbender all appear on the
list of settlers who were assigned to various "Frontier Forts of PA" (Northampton County)
during the 1750-1760 period.
--Jacob Roth and Bittenbender were both killed in an Indian attack May 2,
1757, in Hamilton Twp., Monroe County, PA. Account of this incident is related in
a book "Frontier Forts of PA", by Thomas Lynch Montgomery, 1916. Excerpt from this

-- After the death of Jacob Roth, George Hartlieb was appointed guardian of
Conrad (age 5) and his siblings, by the Orphan’s Court, Northampton County.
-- Anna Elizabeth Roth, "widow of Jacob Roth, who was killed by the Indians
beyond Blue Mountains", returned to Moore Twp. She remarried Sept. 8, 1758 to
George Stolze.
