      9. Clara Luberta Gardner131,132,133,134,135,136,137, born 08 June 1869 in near Decatur, Iowa138,139,140,141,142,143,144,145; died 31 July 1968 in her home in Des Moines, Iowa146,147. She was the daughter of 18. Wilson I Gardner and 19. Teresa Catherine Nightwine.

Notes for Leroy Ernest Shelton:
Known as "Leeds". Listed in the 1870 federal Census as 7 y/o born in Iowa (3). Listed in 1885 State of Iowa Census as living with his sister Mary E Fisher and was 21 year old teamster born in Decatur co Iowa (6). Is listed in 2 of his childrens birth records as Ernest Leroy Shelton (1) and in 1 child record (1) and his marriage record as Leroy Ernest Shelton (2). The Decatur Marriage record lists him as Leroy Ernest Shelton; residence Decatur, Iowa ; occupation carpenter; age 28; Date of license 28 Aug 1890, Place of birth Decatur City, Iowa; Father's name was John T Shelton, mother's name Jane (or Jani?) Flower. Marriage date was August 29 1890 to Clara Luberta Gardner by Justice of the Peace W.D. Moore. Witnesses were Wilson I Gardner, Allie Gardner (2) In 1895, the Sheltons are still living in Decatur (13). 2 Nov 1900 he and Lutie sold Lot 7 Block 9 to Frank Springer for $100 and this was the same lot Lutie bought from the Hustons on 6 October 1900 (4). It was also adjacent to one owned by M.T. Shelton (which he later also sold in Dec 1900) (4). Leroy appears in the Military List of 1906 for Decatur City, aged 36 (12). In 1910 they were still in Decatur (14). The 1925 State census of Iowa gives a very complete record of his family which included 2 grown sons Horace and Fred, Horace's wife Loretta and his 3 year old son Edward Leroy (5) His obituary in the Decatur County Journal (dated 30 May 1929) said that he was a well known resident of Decatur and had been critically ill for six months (11). He was improving but after eating a hearty Sunday meal he grew suddenly worse and died shortly thereafter (11).

Known to great grandchildren as Grandma Luttie. In 1880, she was living with her parents in Centre twp Decatur co IA (10).
Listed in 1885 State of Iowa census living with her parents in Decatur as Berta Gardner, age 15 born in Decatur co Iowa. The marriage registry in Decatur lists her as Clara Luberta Gardner, place of birth Decatur county, Iowa; aged 22; Father was Wilson I Gardner and Mother was Tressa C Gardner (3). The State census of Iowa however gives her mother as Katherine Nightwine(5). Marriage date was August 29 1890 to Leroy Ernest Shelton by Justice of the Peace W.D. Moore. Witnesses were Wilson I Gardner, Allie Gardner (3). In 1895, the Shelton are still living in Decatur (11). Buried in Decatur cemetery with the graveside service officiated by Rev. Jerry Evelsizer on Friday August 2, 1968 at 10:00 (1). 6 October 1900 she paid $100 for Lot 7 Block 9 of Decatur City which she purchased from Mattie E and B.F. Huston. 22 Nov 1900 she and Leroy sold the same lot to Frank Springer for $100 (4).

Father Leroy E Shelton, occupation painter; mother Clara Luberta Gardner, the doctor's name was Dr. Springsteen (1). He appears in the 1895 census in Decatur twp, living with his parents (4). In 1910 he is 19 and living with his parents in Decatur (5). In 1915, he was living with wife Donna and daughter Guinevere in Decatur (6). He served in WWI in the Navy as a chief quartermaster, his entire service taking place in the US (2).
His tombsone says he was Iowa com U.S. Navy World War I (3).

Fred was aged 9 and living with his parents in Decatur IA in the 1910 census (4) and in 1915 (6). Fred apparently tried to enlist in WWI at the same time as Ralph and Horace. However, he was only 16 at the time, so was discharged for fraudulent enlistment (1). In 1910, he was 19 and living with his parents in Decatur (5). He is listed in 1925 Iowa State Census as living in his parents household (2). He was living with his mother, when he died 1 May 1966 (3).
