Notes for Asa Martin Whitlock:
Asa was in the 1850 Iowa census in Mahaska co, Iowa in Oskaloosa and at the time he was aged 16 (7). He was living with the Bartlett family, their relationship to him unknown (7). In this census he was listed a born in Illinois (7). He was also enumerated with his mother and siblings in Monroe twp, where he was 15 years old and born in Kentucky (7). 6 April 1854 Asa Martin Whitlock and his mother Abigail Whitlock sold 40 acres of land to John A Kernan (15) but 2 Nov 1858 he and Ezra issued another deed to John Kernan for the identical tract of land (15). In probate documents 27 Nov 1855, Asa is mentioned as the "of age" brother of Ezra and May Whitlock, minor heirs of James and Abigail Whitlock, deceased (11). He inherited 1/3 of 40 acres of land which he wished to sell and the guardian of his younger siblings also wished to sell their portion (11). The land was split into 8 lots of five acres each and sold at auction on 10 May 1856 and each of the heirs of James and Abigail Whitlock recieved a third of the revenue (11). His father originally purchased this land 23 March 1848 (13).
In a deed dated 16 Dec 1856 Asa sold some land to J L Warren (9) (16) a few months after Ezra and Mary Jane's guardian sold their portion to the same man (16).
Asa was married to Lucinda Hensyel, 24 March 1859, in Mahaska co IA by Isaac Mills, Justice (2). He is in the 1860 Iowa census, Mahaska co , Monroe twp, 26 y/o farmer born in Kentucky (3). His wife Lucinda, a newborn son Addison were listed in his household as was a 26 y/o physician A.A. Carter who was apparently living with the Whitlocks at the time (3). In a Deed dated 22 May 1860, he bought 14 and 6/100 acres of land from Mark G Fifield (9) (17). Asa enlisted in Co C 15th Iowa Regt for the Civil War as a private in Keokuk Iowa 31 Dec 1861 (18). His service records says he was aged 28, 5 ft 8 1/2 in, light complexion and hair, blue eyes , born in Russell county Kentucky (18). He was present for all musters from Jan 1862 to Jan 1865 when he was discharged except August 1863 when he was sick in Vicksburg MS, Sept 1863 furloughed to Iowa while sick, Oct 1863 sick in Iowa but back by Nov 1863, April to June 1864 when he was detached to guard duty at Corp HQ (18). He and his wife were grantees of a Quit claim, George Hensyel being a grantor on 18 March 1864 (10)(14). He also purchased 26 acres of land from William Gatewood (guardian) 11 April 1865 (10). After his return from the service, Asa continued to have lung problems that he incurred during the service while at Vicksburg and this same illness prompted his medical leave from there (19). The lung problems and cough were so debilitating that a third of the time he was unable to do manual labor (19). He was completely disabled for a few months before his death which was attributed to chronic diarrhea and lung problems incurred in the service (19).
He was listed as A. Whitlock, father of Arthur on Arthur's marriage records (1).
Asa, Lucinda and two of his children M.E and N.M. are all buried under 1 stone in Bedwell cemetery with no dates given (6). WPA Cemetery Records for Mahaska co list him as born 1833, died 1875 and buried in Bedwell cemetery, Mahaska co Iowa (8).
His widow filed for Civil War pension 30 June 1880 and his children filed for pensions 12 May 1890 (12).

  Notes for Lucinda Hensyel:
Lucinda is on the 1850 census in Oskaloosa Iowa, aged 11 born in Ohio and living with her parents and siblings (8). Lucinda appears on the 1856 Iowa, Mahaska co, census in Monroe Twp with her parents John and Susanna (3). She was 16 years old at the time, born in Ohio and a 16 year resident of the state of Iowa (3), which means her family must have left Ohio for Iowa just after she was born.
Lucinda was married to Asa Whitlock, 24 March 1859 in Mahaska co IA by Isaac Mills, Justice (2). She appears on the 1860 Iowa Census, with her husband and her new born son Addison (4). 18 March 1864 she and Asa issued a quit claim deed to George Hensyel (father or brother is unknown) (12). She appears in 1870 Iowa Census (her age and birthplace are in error) with her husband, Addison and two daughters (5). Lucinda is on 1880 census in the same township, listed as 40 y/o widow born in Ohio, both parents born in PA, so Asa had died by this time (and Arthur is aged 10) (6). She is buried under one stone with Asa and two of her children M.E. and N.M. in Bedwell cemetery in Monroe twp, but no dates are given on the stone (7). WPA Cemetery Records show Lucinda as born in 1839, died in 1918 buried in Bedwell cemetery in Monroe Iowa (9).
She was listed as Lucinda Hensyel, mother of the groom on Arthur Whitlock's marriage records (1).
She filed for Civil War pension as Asa's widow 30 June 1880 (10). She remarried to Reuben Broyles 1 Oct 1880 and they divorced 13 April 1907 after which time she resumed using the surname Whitlock (14). Mahaska co Marriage records list her marriage to Broyles as 30 Sept 1880 (15).
Her State of Iowa Death Certificate gives her date of death as 1 Feb 1918 in Oskaloosa Iowa (11). Her father is listed as John Hansel born in Germany (11). His place of birth is contradicted by his 1850 and 1856 census records and by Lucinda's 1880 and after that give his place of birth as Pennsylvania (11).
Her obituary says that Lucinda died at the home of her daughter in Oskaloosa, Mrs Bige Hartgrave (13).
