Notes for Mary Woods: Listed as mother of Mary Sires in her death record information and was named as Mary Woods (1). The IGI in her marriage record with John Fitzer has her name as Polly Woods (2). She was living with her parents (Hugh Woods was the only Woods in Elizabeth twp Lawrence co OH in 1820) in Lawrence co OH in 1820 (3). She and John Fitzer were in Indiana by 1830. She was listed with him in the 1850 census, aged 48 and born in Pennsylvania (4). Her children and grandchildren lived very close by (4). She and her husband migrated to Iowa with the Sires circa 1855 where she appears living with John Fitzer and children in the 1856 state census in Wayne county, Washington township, listed as Mary Fitzer 54 y/o born in Pennsylvania, 0 year resident of the state of Iowa (5). She and her husband were living next door to the Sires in 1860 in Wayne county, Washington township where she was 58 y/o born in Pennsylvania (6). She and John are listed in 1870 still near the Sires and having accumulated a large amount of wealth (7). She was aged 66 born in PA (7). John Fitzer died in July 1871 (10) and late Oct she and her children appeared in court to request that the will of John Fitzer be set aside and this request was granted (10). 21 Jan 1873 John's lands in Lucas county were partitioned among his heirs and Mary as his widow received her share (12). On this same 21 Jan 1873 Mary also petitioned that the court appoint a guardian for the mentally impaired George Fitzer (13). The estate of John Fitzer was settled in 1874 and Mary received the sum of $1457.62 as her portion (11). In 1880, she is living only with her son George, and was listed as a widow, aged 78 , born in PA, both parents born in PA (8). Since her afflicted son John died July 1881and in view of Mary's age in 1880, it is assumed that he had been institutionalized (9). Mary's gravestone lists the year of her birth as 1801 and her date of death as 8 May 1883 (9). She was buried at Woods cemetery, Washington twp, Wayne co Iowa (9). Sources: (1). Notes for William Fitzer: I believe him to be a son of John and Mary (Woods) Fitzer. There were only two men in Cass co IN capable of having a son born 1822 in Ohio- John Fitzer and his brother Joseph. In 1840 William would have been at least 18. In 1840 John had a male 20-30 which was likely William and Joseph had no male in this range (1). In 1850 Joseph was found to have a son William, but he was only aged 13 (2) He would be too young to be the William Fitzer who married Drusilla Moulder in Scioto co OH in 1844 (3) or be aged 37 in 1860 (4). According to the 1860 William was born in Lawrence co OH around 1822-1824 which is where both John and Mary Fitzer and Joseph and Sarah Fitzer were living at the time. 14 Sept 1854 William sold land in Cass co to Tylee Shepard (5-p45). 30 Dec 1861 they sold lot 24 in Walton IN to George Bowyer(6). 19 Nov 1862 William and Drusilla sold land in Cass co to Henry Bishop (7).
