Ancestors of Pamela Loretta Shelton

      48. John James Whitlock, born Abt. 1813 in VA or KY1568; died Bef. 22 July 1848 in Mahaska co, Iowa1569,1570,1571,1572. He was the son of 96. William Whitlock and 97. Rosanna Shelton. He married 49. Abigail Hartley 04 July 1832 in Russell County, KY1573,1574,1575.

      49. Abigail Hartley1576, born 1815 in KY1577,1578; died Bef. June 1855 in Monroe twp, Mahaska co, IA1579. She was the daughter of 98. John Hartley and 99. Nancy Crosby.

Notes for John James Whitlock:
His parentage is unproven, but I have listed the parents that I believe are by far the most likely. The William Whitlock family was the only Whitlock family in Russell co KY when James was their and in the vicinity when he first appears on the tax lists. He may have been in Illinois prior to Iowa since the people that Asa worked for in Mahaska co believed he was from Illinois. It is likely that James came to Illinois after the other Whitlocks and was not in Morgan co IL when William died.
In the IGI he is listed as John J Whitlock, married Abigail Hartley in Russell county KY 4 July 1832 (4). In the Russell county marriage records John J Whitlock married Abargia Hartley 4 July 1832 by John Bolinger (5). He paid taxes in Russell co KY in 1833 (listed as John J), 1835,36,37 (listed as James) and does not appear on Russell co tax lists after 1837 (6). He owed the estate of John Allen $4.92 4 Aug 1836 (7-p73) and the estate of James McClure $5.00 25 Dec 1835 (7-p185).
Listed as the deceased parent of Asa, Ezra and May J Whitlock in Iowa probate records(1).
He purchased land in Mahaska County (Section 33 Township 77, Range 17W, 40 acres on 23 March 1848, for $50 (2). He was apparently dead by 1850 since in that census, his wife was enumerated as head of household (3). Probate records for him have been found, and he died intestate prior to 22 July 1848 (8). If the ages and birthplaces of that census are correct, the Whitlocks had left Kentucky by 1842 and arrived in Iowa by 1845 (3). James apparently died with outstanding debts, since his estate was subsequently sued by a number of people (8).

  Notes for Abigail Hartley:
The IGI lists her parents as John Hartley and Nancy Crosby and her spouse as James Whitlock (1). Abigail was listed as head of household in Mahaska county Iowa, Monroe twp in the 1850 Iowa Census (3). She was listed as 35 years old and born in Kentucky (3). 6 April 1854 Abigail and Asa sold 40 acres of land to John A Kernan (4).
The first probate records relating to her demise in Mahaska co IA are dated June 1855 (2) in which John Straughan was appointed executor (2). It would appear that she died intestate and suddenly so that she was unable to make arrangements for the disposition of her property, land and minor children (2) and James would seem to have preceded her in death (2).

In 1860 he was a laborer living with Daniel and Margeret Roomer in Mahaska co, Monroe twp just a few houses from Asa and Lucinda Whitlock and listed as living in Illinois (3).       50. John George Hensyel, born 18 March 1798 in Pennsylvania1589,1590,1591,1592,1593; died 18 March 1875 in Monroe, Mahaska co IA1594,1595. He married 51. Susanna Whitmore 14 February 1832 in Stark co Ohio1596,1597.

      51. Susanna Whitmore, born 12 March 1812 in Ohio1598,1599,1600,1601; died 12 March 1865 in Monroe, Mahaska co IA1602,1603.

Notes for John George Hensyel:
Father of Lucinda Hensyel. Name was John George but seemed to prefer George or J.G. According to Aaron Hensyel's death certificate, the Hensyels lived in Stark county Ohio and John George married Susanna Whitmore (14). Because Susanna and John George were not married until 1832, the elder Hensyel children must have been born to John George from a previous wife. He is probably the George Hentzel living in Plains twp in Stark co OH in the 1830 census (17). He first appears on the tax lists in Plain twp in 1828 and is seen up to 1833 (18). George and Susanna were married 14 Feb 1832 in Stark county (15). After leaving Ohio, they settled in Louisa co IA before moving to Mahaska county (19). He bought land in Mahaska county Iowa in S 4 T74 R16, 171 acres in NW14 on 2 May 1848 (5) and another 160 acres 15 Nov 1848 (5). He bought 172 acres in the same area NE1/4 7 April 1849 (5).
He is listed as George Hansel in the 1850 census aged 52 with Susanna aged 35 (3). 29 Sept 1852 he bought another 40 acres of land (5). 29 Dec 1856 John and Susannah sold land to Mark Fifield (16). He, George Fifield, Mark G Fifield and others made the request for the survey of Georgetown and they also donated some of the land which was platted and recorded 21 Aug 1859 (11). John G was in Monroe twp next to George Fifield and son Samuel in the 1854 state census with 5 males, 4 females, 3 voters (13).
John T Hensyel (spelled in census as Hensyle), appears in the 1856 State of Iowa census in Mahaska co, Monroe Twp, 49 year old farmer, born in Pennsylvania, 16 year resident in state of 1owa (1) which means he and his family arrived in Iowa in 1840 just when that part of the country was opened. His wife Susanna and daughter Lucinda also appear on the 1856 census, as well as other children and some Hensyel men who were too old to be children of John's and may have been younger brothers or nephews (1). Because Lucinda, aged 16 was also a 16 year old resident, and born in Ohio, the family must have left Ohio just after she was born (1). 26 Dec 1856 John G and Susannah sold land to Mark Fifield (6). 21 Aug 1858 John and Susannah sold Lot 1, Block 4 in Georgetown to E.N. Woodworth (11). 31 Jan 1859 John and Susannah (listed as Susan) sold land to Lash and Lowe for $610.20 (7).
He was in the 1860 Census listed as George J Hensell and was listed as 66 y/o, born in Penn (8). His daughter Lucinda and her husband Asa Whitlock and children were also living with them (8). 12 April 1862 John and Susannah sold Lots 7 and 8 in Block 2 in Georgetown to their son George Hensyel (12-p62) and 4 Nov 1861 sold Lot 2 in Block 1 to son Henry (12-p100). 24 March 1864 John and Susannah sold Lots 3 and 6 in Block 6 to George Fifield (12-p327).
John George was in the 1870 census, still in Monroe twp Mahaska co, now a widower and living with his son George (9). He was listed as J. George Hensyel 75 y/o born in Pennsylvania (9).
Mahaska Cemetery records show he is buried in Bedwell cemetery in Monroe twp, and his date of death is given as 1875 (2). The WPA records on his gravestone list his date of birth as 18 March 1798 and death as 18 March 1875 (so he died on his birthday) (10).

  Notes for Susanna Whitmore:
Because Susanna and John George were not married until 1832, the elder Hensyel children must have been born to John George from a previous wife.
Susanna is listed as Susan Hansell, aged 35 born in Ohio on the 1850 Iowa Census in Oskaloosa Iowa living with her family (3). Susanna is listed on the 1856 State of Iowa census, in Mahaska co, Monroe twp, with her husband and family (1).
She was 42 years old at the time, born in Ohio, and a 16 year resident of the state of Iowa (1). She and her husband were in the 1860 census where she was listed as 50 y/o born in Ohio and in the same household were her daughter Lucinda, son in law Asa Whitlock and their baby Addison (4). Families of her other children lived in the households on all sides and elsewhere nearby (4). She died in 1865 and was buried in Bedwell cemetery in Monroe twp, Mahaska co Iowa (2).
