* The Sherrod Family: NC, GA, AL, TX*

Updated July 17, 2001

I am researching the Sherrod family. I know that its roots extend back to the late 1600's in North Carolina, then run briefly through Georgia and into northern Alabama. One of the more prominent members of this family was Col. Benjamin Sherrod who settled in Courtland, AL. Col. Sherrod was very wealthy, owning several plantations and hundreds of slaves. Among his many accomplishments, he started the first railroad in Alabama.
My great grandfather was William Crawford Sherrod, one of the sons of Col. Benjamin Sherrod. W.C. Sherrod served both as an Alabama State Representative and as a U.S. Representative from Alabama. W.C. Sherrod was a member of the Alabama Congress of Succession and one of only three men who voted against succession because he said he feared war with the North would devestate the South. However, when war came he immediately enlisted as a captain in the Confederate Army.

If you have an interest in this branch of the Sherrod family, please let me know.
