Once upon a time...... I was born Samantha Thomas, I seem to taken on the mantle of family historian, and I seem to originate from a long line of coal miners! My Father , Colin Thomasmarried Joyce Scothern, whose Father's family came from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. My Mother's family were called Hind and came mainly from Derbyshire. My Great-Great Grandfather William Martin, died in a pit explosion in Blackwell, Derbyshire in 1895. He married Mary Shawcroft, who was the Mother of Ada Martin, who married Tom Godson Hind. They were the parents of my Gran, Barbara Hind, who married Frank Scothern. Tom's parents are confusing me somewhat as I have them down as Hinchcliffe and Cousins. I presume that his mother married two or three times, as he appears to have siblings with both surnames! Go to his page to find out more as I dig deeper into his past.. My Parents married other people too, I have a Hillsdon to research too! Apparently, Tom went to America with his brother Jack Hind, Tom came back. All that is remembered of Jack when he visited his family in England was his big hat! I think he turned his toes up in Detroit... Frank Scothern's parents were Harold Jarvis Scothern, and Eleanor Jane Wass. I don't know much about the Scothern side, but the Wass side goes back to the 1500's! My Father's family seem to originate from Wiltshire, my Great Grandmother was Edith Wiltshire. They then invaded Wales, and produced my Great-Great-Great Granddad John Thomas, and some more coal miners. He married Mary Hopkins (for those of you showing your age- not the singer!) When work ran out, the Thomas side then marched into Nottinghamshire where there were, handily, more coal pits. My Granddad Frederick William Thomas who married Margaret Gertrude Foster whose Father married a Haywood who apparently came from Cambridgeshire and they were married in Islington, London. I married a Neish for a few years, and they were a real variety incorporating the whole of the United Kingdom of Great Britain with some Irish thrown in for good measure! Their name included Naylor, Lynn, Ayres, Waters and Howlett. I then joined the Shepherd family, who boasted a collection of Johnson's, Ricards and Pratts and moonrakers! As you can see, I've got my work cut out, so please, if you can, give me a hand, as I view this as a family resource, and the more info, the better it will be! I have a few people that I don't know what to do with, ones whose connections to the family puzzle me, and the one's who I don't recogniseat all. If you can help, you'd make me very happy! if you want copies of the pictures, please email me for more details. My present family may originate from coal miners and farm labourers - how nice and British eh? I have discovered many other names along the way, which have all added to the wonderful tapestry of my Ancestor’s bloodlines. Any information would be appreciated. I am also willing to share the information that I have. You can also access more details - and where I could get them- photos on: http://www.samsfamilytree.co.uk/
