I starting researching about 5 years ago. At first I looked at the paternal side with my father's family, Bryant, and his grandmother,Trowbridge. They both came to the Isle of Wight from Wiltshire in the mid 1800's. I have not been able to get much progress on these lines, as they seem to have moved about a lot, although I am hoping to find the last link to someone in Australia.
I have had more luck with my father's mother, she was from an Island family, Griffiths, in Yarmouth, one of her ancestors married a Biddlecombe and he emigrated to the United States about 1869, leaving her in England to bring up 6 children on her own. I am also researching my mother's side, her maiden name was Stephens, another Island name, I have gone back to the mid 1700's with this line.My grandmother's maiden name was Choppin and I have had wonderful success with this, finding a cousin in Australia, thanks to all the information he put on the internet.

Now I am researching my husbands line, starting obviously with Shilton, who originally came from Warwickshire, moving to Worcestershire and then Newbury in Berkshire, before coming to the IW. His maternal side the Day family comes from Aldershot in Hampshire, and Watford from the Isle of Dogs in London. His Great Grandfather James Watford was originally a River Boatman on the Thames, but he then joined the Thames Division of the Metropolitan Police.

CHOPPIN - Kent,IW
GRIFFITHS - IW
STEPHENS - IW
TROWBRIDGE - IW,Wiltshire

Family Photos

  • Joseph and Eliza Biddlecombe nee Griffiths (289 KB)
This photo was taken sometime before 1868 when Joseph emigrated alone to Michegan. His son John followed when he was about 14.
  • Mystery Choppins (19 KB)
I first thought this was my Great Grandparents, Augustus and Emily Choppin as I have photos of him with my Mother, but it isn't. I think it must be either of his two brothers Reuben or Goulden with their wives. I have another one of them that looks as though they are celebrating an important wedding anniversary.
  • Choppin Family (19 KB)
This is my Grandmother Mabel Jessie Stephens nee Choppin, with her father Augustus Henry Choppin.
  • Stephens Family Photo (71 KB)
This is William Henry Stephens,my grandad, and Mabel Jessie Choppin,my grandmother with their family- Back left,Grace, Back right,Edith.Front L to R-Harry,Winifred and Lilian,my mother, circa 1916.
  • My Grandmother Stephens (40 KB)
    Mabel Jessie Stephens nee Choppin
  • My Mother (15 KB)
This is my mother, Lilian Elsie Bryant nee Stephens aged about 20 circa 1926
  • William Henry Stephens (17 KB)
My Grandad had his own horse and cart and was a coalman. The horse used to put his head in the window for his breakfast every day. Grandad died of blood poisoning due to a piece of coal imbedded in his finger.
  • Arthur Maurice and Hilda Elizabeth Bryant (14 KB)
Arthur was a Blacksmith/Farrier and Hilda nee Griffiths was a teacher before she married. This photo was taken about 1933, I think for their Silver Anniversary
