Find Family

The Shingledecker-Young Genealogy Page

Updated February 20, 2002

In a surprisingly short time, my mother and I have found out quite a bit about our family genealogy. We've even managed to get some family photos of my g-g-g grandfather, a real treasure. All-in-all, we've been pretty lucky.
We want more, though! If you find a trace of your own family in our website, please contact us and let us know. Most of our family is from Ohio, Indiana, North and South Carolina, and Florida. The surnames we are searching for and have information on are:

Shingledecker Lineage: Collins*, Harshman, K, Middleton, Shingledecker*, Tarpenning*

Young/Hord Lineage: Carraway, Driggers*, Hill*, Heise, Hord, Silcox, Young

* We are particularly interested in finding more information about these surnames.

Please email us if you find a connection or have more information about one of my branches.

There are two sides of our family being researched, the SHINGLEDECKER side and the YOUNG side. Most of the research is done from the genetic makeup of myself (Rainya, a daughter of Nola), with my father being a Shingledecker and my mother being a Young.

We are especially interested in finding more information about three individuals. You will find more detailed information about their descendants and locations in one of the five reports linked to this page. A brief story about what we do know about them is explained below:

*************** Thomas J. HILL's Story ********************

Thomas J. HILL [b. abt. 1848 in South Carolina] married Elizabeth CARRAWAY [b. abt. 1842 in Florida] on May 19, 1867. We have found Elizabeth's family back quite a ways, but have yet to find Thomas's ancestors. Thomas and Elizabeth had at least one son, Wade Hampton Hill [b. December 12, 1868 d. December 6, 1935 in Eagle Lake, Polk County, Florida].

Wade married Mary Etta DRIGGERS [b. April 15, 1873, d. November 2, 1942] abt. 1890 in Eagle Lake. They had 9 children, one of which is my great-grandmother.

************* John Robert Collins's Story *****************

On the other side of my family, we are looking for John Robert COLLINS [b. btw. 1830-1860]. He married Rebecca MIDDLETON and they had 14 children. One of the children was Frances W. Collins, who married Charles Taylor TARPENNING in Zenia, Greene County, Ohio. They had two children, Mae and Helen.

The most interesting thing about this branch of the family is that there is a Cherokee Indian (or there’s a story about one) lurking in everyone’s memory. Helen remembers her grandmother looking like an "Indian Squaw" and later family members favor the darker Native American features. We suspect the story comes either from Rebecca Middleton’s genetics or that John Robert Collins’s mother was Indian. (My grandmother is fairly certain that one of the Collins men married an Indian.)

********** Wilbur Granville SHINGLEDECKER's Story *********

We are also searching for any sign of our Shingledecker branch in Greene County, Ohio. This family started in Pennsylvania and moved to Ohio. My great-grandfather is Wilbur Granville SHINGLEDECKER [b. January 30, 1892 in Ohio] who married Helen Leona TARPENNING.

Wiblur's father was Clarence Shingledecker who married Ida HARSHMAN. Clarence's father is Louis Shingledecker who married ELIZABETH KELLEY or KELLY. Unfortunately, we have no dates for these people. We do have the HARSHMAN line back a ways, though.

***********************************************************

We'll be happy to share our information with anyone who finds it useful or interesting.

Have fun, happy researching!
