In 1681, Martin Key (b. ca 1670) was given 489 acres in New Kent Co. by his grandfather, Major Martin Palmer, and JOHN HUMES. Martin was dead by 1706 but was the father of two sons, John (b. ca 1696) and Martin, Jr. (b. ca 1700). This is evidenced by the fact that the records of a 1714 patent make reference to a 1706 escheatment action which occurred in King William Co.:
"Whereas...It appears that one thousand five hundred acres of land lying in the county of King William, formerly King & Queen and before that, New Kent, is found to escheat to us one JOHN HUMES and whereas Ambrose Lipscom in behalf of his son, Richard Lipscom and his other children petitioned formerly for the same, who being opposed by William Noyes and Eliza, his wife, William Holliday, John Fford (Alford?), John Green and John & Martin Key, orphans, by William Fford, their guardian, on a hearing in our general court of our said colony on the twenty ninth day of April, one thousand seven hundred & six, our said court being in the opinion that the lands mentioned in the deeds recited in their order therein made, do not escheat us..."
This document connects John Humes back to two young Key orphans, John and Martin. If John Humes was attempting to regain title to the land he had given up in 1681, the time elapsed would have been about long enough for Martin (b. ca 1670) to have grown up, married and had two sons who still would have been minors in 1706. Although this document does not specifically list John and Martin as the sons of Martin Key (b ca 1670), the assumption that he is the father is accepted by this researcher. Another clue is the fact that many of the families living in the area of Martin Key (b. ca 1670) lived in the vicinity of both John (b ca 1696) and Martin (b ca 1700) after the two were adults.
