Descendants of Martin Key I

Generation No. 2

2. MARTIN⁷ KEY II (MARTIN⁶, JOHN⁵, JOHN⁴, ANDREW³, MATTHEW², NICHOLAS¹) was born Abt 1700, and died May 1757 in Louisa Co., VA, USA. He married ELIZABETH BURFORD Abt 1730, daughter of Daniel Burford.

Notes
Few records survive which mention Martin Key, Jr. (b. ca 1700). However, a guardian bond dated 24 May 1757 lists Elizabeth Key as the widow of Martin Key and names four underage children - Will, Thomas, Jack and Luck (Philip Burford was shown as co-maker of this bond). In a marginal note beside this entry, the clerk wrote that Martin Key died in May 1757.

On the same day that the above-mentioned guardian bond was recorded, Philip and Millicent Burford sold 242 acres to Martin Key III. Also on the same day, a 100 hundred acre tract adjacent to this was given to Thomas Key "for the love and good will they hath for the said Thomas Key and in consideration of the sum of five shillings sterling..." The reference of "love and good will" suggests a familial relationship but the fact that the land was transferred for the nominal price of five shillings strongly supports family ties. The fact that Martin III paid for his land supports the idea that he may have been the son of Martin, Jr. from a previous marriage (not Elizabeth) but due to the lack of records from this period, this question may never be answered. The assumption made here (also Marcus M. Key's article, "The Louisa County Key Orphans") is that Martin III was the brother of Will, Thomas, Jack and Luck and the son of Martin, Jr. and Elizabeth.
