Shipp and Key Family Lines

Updated September 6, 2000

***
I am researching the Shipp surname and can document my line to Thomas Shipp, Sr. (b. ca 1747 prob. in Caroline Co., VA). The identity of the parents of Thomas is questionable but his line is probably linked to the descendants of Josias Shipp, I (d. ca 1705/06 in the Old Rappahannock/Essex County area of VA). Thomas married Jedediah Moore in Goochland Co., VA in 1774. A few years later, Thomas and family moved through the Carolinas and were in Georgia by 1800. Later generations of Shipps pushed westward through Alabama and finally into Texas. My Key ancestors also came from Virginia. John Key (b. ca 1776 in VA) was the son of Martin Key. John married Belinda Milstead in Amherst Co., VA in 1797 and soon moved to Surry Co., North Carolina. Around 1815, John moved into the Mississippi Territory and settled on land that later became part of Walker Co., AL. Toward the end of the ninteenth century, some of John's descendants also moved into Texas. Some of the surnames associated with these two families include: Bailey, Bolen/Bowling, Brooks, Campbell, Carr, Champion, Cole, East, Edwards, Fields, Fleming, Flowers, Foster, Garner/Gardner, Gillespie, Green, Gudger, Gullion/O'Gullion, Holden, Hood, Jefferies, Kennedy, Love, Martin, Milstead, Moore, Oaks/Oakes, Roberts, Roden/Rhoden, Seabolt, Short, Simmerman/Zimmerman, Smith, Spradling, Taylor, Thrash, Walker, Watt/Watts and Wilcox/Wilcoxon.Most of these families lived in the southern United States including: Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and Texas.
