STORIES from the older siblings of Julia Ann Charlton Stewart indicate that George Charlton and four of his sons died in a flooded mine about 1866. His wife was in bed with a 2 day old daughter, Elizabeth, when it happened.

County Durham, living as head of a household with a Fenwick Charlton, unmarr. son 20yrs old, blacksmith, born in Hetton le Hole, Durham and a daughter Alice CHARLTON, 22yrs old, born in Hetton le Hole, Durham.
