Notes for V
ALENTIN SCHULLER:
The only written proof we have regarding the connection between Johann (Valentine) Shuler. Sr. and Frantz Shuler is that in 1766, a Valentine Shuler peitioned as son for his father's records regarding a piece of land called "Fiddler's Run". (This information comes via Greg Hans in Germany.)

Subject: CHILDREN OF VALENTIN SCHULLER -- BIRTHS-- MOST RELIABLE SOURCE

Dear Amanda,

Forgive me for having changed the order of things in preparation for your
possible venture to Sunbury. We have to get down to nuts and bolts. I
have starred* our common ancestor. The research challenges are in (18th
and 17th century) Pennsylvania, not afterwards.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

ORIENTATION: Franz Schuller, d. 1741 [u = u Umlaut (u + two dots above).

----> Valentin Schuller, son, petitions the courts
in 1766 noting that his father died "about 25 years ago"

the following are Valentin Schuller's children

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

1739 (publication date)
The Huebner Catechism was discovered in the holdings of descendants of
William A. Shuler (Marysville, Ohio) 1980/81. Photographs on file. New
photographs desired. It represents the most authoritative source for the
pertinent generation's births.

Title page:

"Zweymahl zwey und fuenfzig Auserlesene Biblische Historien aus dem alten
und neuen Testamente, Der Jugend zum Besten abgefasset von Johann Huebnern,
Rectore des Johannei zu Hamburg, Nebst einer Vorrede E. Hoch-Ehrwuerd.
Ministerii der Stadt Hamburg."// = Two times fifty-two selected biblical
stories from the old and new testaments, condensed as best possible for
young people by Johann Huebner, Rector of the Johannei in Hamburg, along
with a forward by the Reverend Minister of the city of Hamburg.

Published in: Tuebingen, Germany

By: Christian Gottfried Cotta

In: 1739

On the final bound page in Fraktur/red ink, signature matching others of
known property and with usual scroll as appears on Taufscheine:

Johann Vallentin
Schuller
---------------------------------------
This book belonged to Johann Valentin Schuller -- whose own birth is
recorded in the second entry. All entries were made in his father's hand:
Valentin Schuller.
----------------------------------------
(#) note that there are variant readings of this first line. The correct
reading, however, is "der Ehrst" -- "the first". It is important to note
that the Shulers differentiate here between "Valentin" and "Johann
Valentin" in naming. *Johann Valentin Schuller's father's name was
"Valentin". This was also the name of his brother who, it seems, died as
an infant. To date no document has surfaced in which Johann Valentin
Schuller's father, Valentin Schuller, appears as JOHANN Valentin Schuller.
This observation is of direct bearing to Shoemaker's research (copy
forthcoming) since he erroneously distinguishes between JVS the 1st and JVS
the 2nd. There WAS no JVS the 1st. Until documentation shows otherwise,
the Shuler family progression is: Franz (Frantz) ---> Valentin ----->
Johann Valentin ---->. Ignore all spelling variations. Spelling does not
stabilize until the late 19th century. The suffix "-in" is the pre-19th
century marker for women's surnames: Schuller = men. Schullerin = women.
Mertz = March. Abrill = April. Jullius = July. Juni = June. Februar =
February. Read "a." as "on the xth of".

---------------------------

Contents of Huebner catachism upon examination

a.) small collection of 1774-1779 banknotes

b.) a lock of hair tied w/ribbon

c.) a silk embroidered peacock feather bookmark

d.) an unidentified leaf, matching one which appears on period currency

e.) an exquisite Liebesgruss Fraktur piece measuring approx. 4 x 2 " in
superb condition -- see Doc Schwalm's letters of 11 and 17 August 1981

f.) a 1 1/2 x 2 " fragment of a MS reading "VALEN/SCHU" in crude, red,
Fraktur -- assumedly a young man's calligraphic attempt.
