Notes for D
AVID IRA WILLS:
[Wills.FTW]

Birth facts: David Ira Wills was born circa 1848-49 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, the first of two children by Valentine and Jerusia.

Occupations: Farmhand, Teamster

He was living with his father and stepmother (Sarah Forney) on the "home" farm as a farmhand in July 1870 according to the census record.

David married, first, Elizabeth Lamb who was born on June 14, 1855. She died October 24, 1878 at the age of 23 following the birth of their only child and was buried in Fair Avenue Cemetery in New Philadelphia, Ohio on the same lot were David's mother, Jerusia, had been laid to rest the year before.

David remarried to Emma Edith (also shown in records as Edeth E.) Giles on May 20, 1880 in Tuscarawas County. She was born circa 1855 in that county.

David moved from Warren Township, where he had lived with his first wife (Elizabeth), back into the town of New Philadelphia with his second wife by 1882. He was a teamster whose occupation was hauling, according to the birth record of their second son, and he still resided in New Philadelphia in 1887, according the birth record of their last child.

David was living in New Cumberland in Tuscarawas County by 1895 and was still there in 1909. When his father (Valentine) died, he had been left land known as the Mackaman Farm and all farming implements. This farm was located near New Cumberland in Warren Township. According to the 1908 county atlas, David still had four tracts of land in the area. This included two tracts totalling 139 acres on Indian Fork near its intersection with One-Leg Creek. Adjoining one of these was a 135.75-acre tract which appeared to include a building (either a house or a barn). Further along One-Leg Creek was a 20-acre tract of land.

NOTE: In deeds dated March 4, 1887 and November 11, 1889, Valentine purchased "about 293 acres" of land in Warren Township in Tuscarawas County from Daniel Mackaman, executor. Part of this farm was described as "lying west and south of the public road leading from Leesville to New Cumberland and between the forks on One Leg Creek" containing about 153 acres. Total holdings probably made up what Valentine referred to as his New Cumberland Farm. This land, which was known as the Mackaman Farm, was bequeathed with "all the farming implements belonging to me that are now upon said farm" by Valentine to David Ira, his son by his first wife (Jerusia).

The 1917 Rural Directory of Tuscarawas County shows a "D.I. and his wife Edith WILLS on 140 acres he owned in Warren Township near North Cumberland. He had two horses and four cows.

David Ira WILLS reportedly lived to be about 90 years of age. He and his second wife, Emma Edith Giles, had four children.

IRKWOOD ARNOLD:
[Wills.FTW]

Occupation: Farmer

Church affiliation: Methodist-Episcopal

Kirkwood Arnold was born on January 14, 1852 in Goshen Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. He was the son of New Philadelphia residents George and Nancy Neel (Neal) Arnold, both natives of Jefferson County, Ohio. Kirkwood was born and raised on his family's 213-acre homestead in Goshen Township until he was 26 years old, the year he married Mary Caroline WILLS (March 2, 1876). He then moved to the 285-acre farm of his father-in-law, Valentine WILLS, renting it for five years. At the end of that time, it is said, it seemed best that he should return to his family's farm and assist in its management. This he did for the remainder of his father's and his own life. By 1895, Kirkwood's farm was made up of the 213-acres owned by his father plus his wife's half-interest in the 135-acre tract in Canal Dover, Tuscarawas County, which was left to her by her father (Valentine WILLS). Both farms were said to be highly cultivated.

Kirkwood was a Democrat and served as school director circa 1887 to 1895. He belonged to the Men's Brotherhood Class of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The couple was said to be residents of Beaver Dam in 1895 and of New Philadelphia in 1909.

Kirkwood Arnold died on September 30, 1926 at the age of 74 at his home on Beaver Dam Road. His obituary said he had suffered from hardening of the arteries for two years and had been bedfast for five months. Both he and his wife are buried in East Avenue Cemetery in New Philadelphia. The couple had five children.

Kirkwood Arnold: Among the influential citizens and well-to-do agriculturalists of Tuscarawas County is this gentleman, who owns a fine homestead new New Philadelphia, in Goshen Township. He has always donated freely of his means, and in other potent ways, toward the upbuilding of schools, churches and various enterprises benefiting the county.

The parents of our subject were George and Nancy (Neel) Arnold, both natives of Jefferson County, Ohio. George Arnold was born in 1818, and his wife Nancy, in June 1822. They were united in marriage March 17, 1838, in Jefferson County, Ohio, and soon thereafter went to Indiana. In that state Mr. Arnold conducted a farm for two years, and then came to this county. For two or three years subsequently he operated a farm in Union Township, and then bought a place of fifty acres in Goshen Township. As years passed he added to his home farm, until there were two hundred and thirteen acres within its boundaries. The father continued to make his abode on this homestead until he was summoned by the Death Angel, July 24, 1888. His wife died December 31, 1892. They were the parents of three sons and four daughters, as follows: Martha J., deceased; John, of New Philadelphia; Jasper C., deceased; Adeline, Mrs. O.C. Junkins, of New Philadelphia; Kirkwood, our subject; Caroline, wife of George Craig, whose home is in New Philadelphia; and Elzire, who is unmarried and lives at home.

George Arnold served acceptably for many years as Township Trustee, and was also School Director for many years. In politics he was a supporter of the Democratic Party.

Kirkwood Arnold was born on January 14, 1852, and his boyhood passed uneventfully under the parental roof. He continued to live on the old homestead until twenty-six years of age, when he moved to the Valentine Wills Farm of two hundred and eighty-five acres, which place he rented for five years. At the end of that time it seemed best that he should return to the old homestead and assist in its management. He then assumed the control and care of the place during the remainder of this father's lifetime. His present farm comprises two hundred and thirteen acres, and in addition to this, his wife has a half-interest in a tract of one hundred and thirty-five acres, situated near Canal Dover, in this township. Both of these farms are highly cultivated, and if placed on the market would readily command advanced prices.

In 1876 Mr. Arnold married Miss Mary C. Wills, who was born in Tuscarawas County, June 28, 1850, being one of seven children of Valentine and Jerusha (Everett) Wills. Two sons and three daughters have blessed their union, as follows: Daisy F.; Carrie, who died in infancy; Valentine A., George E., and Nellie May. It has been the ambition of our subject to give his children superior educational advantages, and as they were all naturally very intelligent and apt students, they have won honors in that direction. The father has been School Director for the past eight years.

Mr. Arnold has always preferred to devote himself strictly to his own business affairs, and has, therefore, never been desirous of accepting any public office. He is, however, prompt in the discharge of the duties devolving upon him as a citizen, and in his political faith is a Democrat.
