SCRUGGS-LEE-SHUMATE-FARIS-BURTON-THORNTON-ARNOLD-HADEN-HOPKINS-GRAY

We have thoroughly enjoyed researching the following ancestors which include the Shumate, Gray, Lee, Burton, Scruggs families in the Campbell, Bedford, and Pittsylvania Co., VA areas. Through the years, we received alot of help from many people and it has been appreciated. What we have researched is well documented but we hope that this will lead to further documentation on these lines.

Thanks go to Russell Owen (a descendant of Arthur E. Shumate) and Bunny Calvert (a member of the VA-NC Genealogical Society) for showing and tramping through all the cemeteries with us in the Brosville, VA, area as well as contacting alot of the descendants of John Benjamin Shumate and Lucy Ann Callahan. Without them, we never could have done the Shumate genealogy. Also thanks go to Garland Shumate and Judy Stowe for their contributions and photos in the Shumate line.

Please note, as of this date, the ancestry of Charles Lee who married Ann Dabbs has NOT been determined. There is NO documentation available as to his parentage. It has been lost and it may have been found in one of the burned record counties. I have been unable to find any marriage records for any of his children except for Charles Lee, Jr. who married in Cumberland Co., VA. Therefore, I must assume that Charles Lee came to Goochland/Cumberland from one of the burned record counties. YDNA analysis by Relative Genetics (now incorporated in Ancestry.com) from two of John Lee's descendants shows no relationship to the Lees of Virginia, to Richard Lee, the immigrant or to John G. Lee of Patrick Co., VA. In fact, it does not match any of the other Lees who have been tested. As with all genealogy, it is possible that there is a non-marital event or an adopted son that is interfering with these conclusions. He is not related to William Lee who married Dorothy Taylor, either. I have done my best to document what I have found. There are some descendants that are probably missing. I would appreciate any additions or corrections to this genealogy.

There is a CHARLES LEE of Orange Co., VA who died about 1770. He purchased 60 acres in 1767 (Orange Co. DB 14 p. 234-5). He had a son John who deeded the same property in later years.(Research of Harriet Welch) A descendant of this CHARLES LEE submitted his YDNA and it matched other descendants of William Lee and Dorothy Taylor.

CHARLES LEE of Cumberland Co., in his LWT names sons John, William, Joseph (dec'd), Richard and Charles. I have done the best I can with documentation on WILLIAM, JOHN, and RICHARD LEE but in some areas it could be argued that their ancestry may be different than that of Joseph or Charles Lee, Jr. In my case, John, and William, and Richard, even though mentioned in the Will of Charles Lee, Sr., could be confused with other Lees by the same name, and, in fact, may descend from another Lee. What I have done is "follow the trail" and tried to document as much information as I could find regarding these individuals. The trail leads to Charles Lee and Ann Dabbs. However, it is only a paper trail. There are discrepancies in the records as well as missing records so YDNA is the only way to go. I went back to Cumberland Co., VA, a couple of years ago to further look into the records and see if there was something I could find that mentioned "my son" between Charles Lee, Sr., and John, William and Richard. I could not find any record that specifically said "my son" on any of them. This is just another example of why YDNA is important. You know, the paper trail I have followed could be wrong. We need more participants from the Charles Lee family to have their YDNA tested in order to compare the results and determine a definite conclusion.

Some have said that Charles Lee had a daughter Keziah Lee because she is mentioned in his LWT and received "special legacy". This is not accurate - It was Joseph Lee, his son, who had a daughter Keziah Lee
