This gravesite is located in Hyler-Shumate cemetery near Brosville, VA. Samuel was son of John Benjamin Shumate and Lucy Ann Callahan. He married 1) Mary D. Ranson, daughter of John Robert Ranson and Mary M. Vaughan; 2) Nannie Watkins Thornton, daughter of Thomas J. Thornton and Adeline E. Thomas. This is the cemetery where most of the Shumates are buried and is referred to as the Family Cemetery.
