The Siebenthal Family History 49 Family coat of arms 49 Family civil histories, as early as 1100’s 150 copies of actual church records of marriages, births and deaths in Switzerland churches. I am unable to place the black and white coat of arms and civil records on my Home Page BUT will be happy to E-mail this information. The earliest written record that I have is a certificate dated October 6, 1175, which appears in a registry of Ruggisberg recordingthe donation of the Ober and Nieder Simmental valleysby Herzog (Duke) Berchtold IV to THREESeptem (seven) Vallibus ( vallis, valley) BARONS.Johannes de (of) Septem Vallibus moved from the Simmental valleys to Gruben bei Gstaad, Bern, Switzerland.Saanenland is a German speaking area so the name was changed to Johannes Von Siebenthal, (Sieben, seven), (thal, valley). My grandfather Casper Von Siebenthal moved from Saanen, Bern, Switzerland to Bex, Vaud, Switzerland. Vaud is a French speaking canton and his name was then written Gaspard. He maintained the vineyards that belonged to the Saanen people. After two generations, according to church records, the name was changed again to De Siebenthal. The Von and De come from the minor Nobility of the THREE Barons.ALL Siebenthals that I am aware of in Switzerland today are either Von or De Siebenthal. Of historical interest is the photo taken of a window in the Chapel of Gstaad, Bern, Switzerland with the Von Siebenthal coat of arms.Johannes de (of) Septem Vallibus gave 100 pounds to this chapel on July 1, 1511.This information was translated from the German which reads; Johannes de (of) SeptemVallibus on July 1, 1511 in a donation document by gift of 100 pounds to the Chapel of Gstaad. My Siebenthal and Dufour ancestors immigrated to the United States in 1801 and settled in Switzerland County, Indiana in 1806.I have traced my Siebenthal family, father to son, back to 1460; and my Dufour family, father to son, back to Adam Dufour born August 19, 1597 in Sales (a village) that was incorporated into the city of Montrerux, Vaud, Switzerland. There were SEVEN Dufour branches, each with their own coat of arms in the canton of Vaud in 1936. I have the “ARMORIAL VAUDOIS” volumes. There are 1,200 color coat of arms and about 3,000 black and white. The volumes have around 4,000 surnames for the canton of VAUD, Switzerland.ANYONE looking for their families in the canton of VAUD can contact me and I will be happy to E-mail you what I find.ALL of the French surname coat of arms, found below, came from this source. The German surname coat of arms, found below, came from the book,”Die altesten Geschlechter der Landschaft Saanen.” | |
