| Family research on Sebastian Sigl and Thekla Ranzinger and Johann George Sigl and Magdalena Saxinger. Sebastian SIGL was from Zwiesel, Germany. He was born in 1832. He married Thekla RANZINGER in Zwiesel, Germany and had 9 children. He then married Theres SCHINK after Thekla Sigl died in Zwiesel, Germany in 1872. Sebastian and Theres came to America in 1873 with the children aboard the ship S.S. Holsatia between April 4th and May 15th. The steamer belonged to "The Hamburg Line." It was built by Caird & Co, Greenock. It was launched on March 9th 1868. It weighed 3,134 tons, had a straight bow, 1 funnel, 2 masts, iron construction, screw propulsion, and a service speed of 12 knots. It also had passenger accommodation for 90 in 1st class, 130 in 2nd class and 520 in steerage. The captain of the ship was B.H.A Barends during 1871-1875. He made at least 2 round trips between Hamburg and New York (Hamburg-Havre-New York). 1878 the ship was acquired by the Russian Voluntree Fleet and renamed Rossija, then in 1894 by Dnestr (russian navy), 1910 by Blokshif No. 5 (hulk) and finally in Oct. 1916 it was scuttled at Trebizond in the Black Sea. During the year that Sebastian traveled to America there was 17 births and 44 deaths aboard ship. The trip Sebastian took had 917 passengers and only one person got sick and was sent to hospital. They went to America on April 4th 1873 and landed on May 15th 1873 in New York, so it took them 43 days to get here, which makes for a long trip. |
