59. Tax List Garrard County, (1800 Database KY Early Census Index), Marion T. Mershon HARRODSBURG - Marion Thomas Mershon, 85, of VanArsdall Drive, died Friday at the VA Hospital in Lexington. Born Oct. 5, 1920, in Salvisa, he was the son of the late Willie K. and Nannie Oran Mershon. He was a retired farmer and employee of Southern States. He was an Army veteran of World War II and received four Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He served as a deacon at Salvisa Christian Church. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 6935. Survivors include his wife, Jennie M. Mershon; a son, Arnold T. Mershon; three grandsons, Marion T. Mershon, Robert L. Mershon, and Michael W. Darland; and six great-grandchildren. He was prededed in death by a daughter, Alice F. Roach. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Ransdell Funeral Chapel by the Revs. Vicki L.. Ray and William Mounts. Burial will be in Hebron Cemetery in Lawrenceburg with military rites. Pallbearers will be Gene Hebrock, Michah Waddell, Larry Stopher, Bill Stephens, Franklin Simpson and Tupper Hardman. Honorary pallbearers are George O. Moore, Francis Simpson, Howard Howells, Jack Springate and Arthur Simpson II. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today and Monday prior to service. Memorials may go to Salvisa Christian Church, Mercer County Senior Citizens or VFW Auxiliary. .

68. Lexington Herald-Leader, TAFT Gayle Earl, husband of Carolyn Nell Taft, died Sun, April 22, 2007 at the VA Medial Center. A Lexington native, he was the son of the late John Joseph and Ida Murphy Taft. He was a graduate of Lafayette High, the University of Kentucky and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Gayle served in the US Navy as 1st Class Radioman on the Destroyer and the USS James O'Hara during World War II in Japan, Siapan, as well as Guam. He was a former head coach at Baghdad High, as well as Monticello High School. Gayle retired from the VA Hospital, as the Recreational Director, and in 1985 received a service award in appreciation of 30 years of faithful service to the United States Government where he also volunteered over 25,000 hours. Governor Wendell Ford awarded Gayle the title of Kentucky Colonel, for his Friendship Tour of Poland. He was a member of Arlington Christian Church. In addition to his wife, survivors include sons, Jerry Taft, Temple, TX and Joey Taft of Lexington; a daughter, Robyn Dapson of Lexington; four grandchildren, Jeremiah and Joshua Pittman, Lexington, Christopher Taft, Dallas, TX and Ashley Taft of Temple, TX; as well as two great granddaughters, Kayne Davis, Lexington and Jordyn Gail Price, Temple, TX. Funeral services will be held 10:30am Wed at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd. by Rev. Kristen Bentley. Burial will follow in Lexington Cemetery. Family will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be 7-9pm Tues. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, 9141 Bishop Lane, Suite 110, Louisville, KY 40218. A Lexington native, he was the son of the late John Joseph and Ida Murphy Taft. He was a graduate of Lafayette High, the University of Kentucky and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Gayle served in the US Navy as 1st Class Radioman on the Destroyer and the USS James O'Hara during World War II in Japan, Siapan, as well as Guam. He was a former head coach at Baghdad High, as well as Monticello High School. Gayle retired from the VA Hospital, as the Recreational Director, and in 1985 received a service award in appreciation of 30 years of faithful service to the United States Government where he also volunteered over 25,000 hours. Governor Wendell Ford awarded Gayle the title of Kentucky Colonel, for his Friendship Tour of Poland. He was a member of Arlington Christian Church. In addition to his wife, survivors include sons, Jerry Taft, Temple, TX and Joey Taft of Lexington; a daughter, Robyn Dapson of Lexington; four grandchildren, Jeremiah and Joshua Pittman, Lexington, Christopher Taft, Dallas, TX and Ashley Taft of Temple, TX; as well as two great granddaughters, Kayne Davis, Lexington and Jordyn Gail Price, Temple, TX. Funeral services will be held 10:30am Wed at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd. by Rev. Kristen Bentley. Burial will follow in Lexington Cemetery. Family will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be 7-9pm Tues. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, 9141 Bishop Lane, Suite 110, Louisville, KY 40218.
