Generation No. 1

Notes for C
HARLES (*) SIMMONS:
There is no marriage record for Charles and Frances, but the close family inter-relationship make this marriage quite certain. It is known that Frances married a Simmons, from her father's will.
Charles Simmons bought 598 acres on both sides of Linville Creek August 25, 1784 (Bedford County, Deed Book 7, page 483), which area became a part of Franklin County when it was formed in 1785. He sold 95 1/2 acres to Thomas Simmons on June 21, 1792 (Franklin County, D.B.2, p.391) and an additional 100 acres on Grimes Creek to John Basham in 1795 (D.B. 3, p. 238). It is readily apparent that not all his deeds were recorded, as he still owned 375 acres on Linville Creek when he died.
Charles left no will, but his estate was appraised Dec. 3, 1827, and Skelton Simmons was named to administer the estate. At this time, his wife, was seemingly dead. It was not until 10 years later (May22, 1837, D.B.15, p.349) that his property was sold to Skelton Simmons. In this deed, all of the children named signed. The deed states that Milly, Rhoda, Mary, Elijah, and Anna are of Jackson County, Tennessee. And that Charles of Sumner County, Tennessee and that Moses was still in Franklin County, Virginia. A search of census records in Jackson County, Tenn for 1820-30-40-50 has turned up only Jobe Meador and wife Milly, and Richard Clark and wife Mary. The second deed signed by Thomas Simmons of Sumner County, TN and recorded on 9 October 1838 relinquishing title and claim to these same two tracts. Deed was recorded by Skelton on 9 October 1838. This is verification to me that Charles was Thomas's father.
