SHIRLEY'S ROOTS

Updated May 21, 2008

I was adopted in 1945, as a GI Baby, and began my search in 1998. First contact was with my father, Fred Massie, who still lived in California. We met in 2000, for my birthday. Very sadly, Fred had Alzheimer's, and died in 2002, leaving me with some wonderful memories of him. My interest in genealogy began while finding ways to communicate with a man whose short term memory was lost.
My birth mother, Sheila had died young, in 1982. It is my deepest regret that we never met, but I have met my half sister, Pat, and we stay in touch.

I have also explored my adoptive family's history. Between these two sides, during the 18th and 19th centuries, I have discovered a rich and varied history of pioneers, farmers, planters, Indian agents, Revolutionary War heroes, Cornish mining emigrants, and the Gold Rush, Naval and Military service, and a background of hard work and hardship, immigration from Ireland to England, England to America, tradesmen working in The City of London and agricultural workers and craftsmen in the countryside. A period of history where the Workhouse was an ever present threat for those who fell into hard times.

One thing has impressed me greatly during my search. The willingness of others to share their work, and help each other. I currently help others with their research, and also carry it out on their behalf.

You are welcome to use my research. I ask only two things: That you try to use it accurately, and include an acknowledgment, so that other people can trace the sources back to me.

Good Hunting!
