Notes for John Lorenzo Sinclair:
Died from effects of a fall from a horse.Had been very successful planter, owned large acreage, cotton gin, etc.Story goes that he always rode a spirited horse and was always accompanied by young boy as his "groom." Reportedly, the horse stumbled, dumping John into an icy stream of water during the winter.By the time the groom could ride for help, John was thoroughly chilled and died shortly afterwards, probably from injuries and exposure.
Friends called him "Rand."The name Lorenzo was reported to have been in honor of the minister, Lorenzo Dow, who figured prominently in the religious life of early Lowndes and Dallas County, AL families.Three Selma families still used the name, Lorenzo, - the Morgans, the Johnsons, and the Sinclairs into the 1920s.
Was great friends with Dr. Dan Edwards, Littleton (Old Man Litt) Edwards, "Mr. Charlie" Walker, all neighboring land owners-planters.(See snapshot in JLS's scrapbook, given to EMS by Nell Calhoun Edwards, Old Man Litt's granddaughter-in-law.)

Notes for Joseph T. Pilcher: Uncle Joe once told me the following story of his early life: He was eldest son of "poor" Baptist minister in South Georgia.Left home at age 16, desperately looking for work "to help out" his family at home.Answered an advertisement from a Mr. Varner, owner of Varner's Drug store in Selma, Alabama.Mr. Varner hired him, told him to go to work at the soda fountain counter in the drug store.Uncle Joe had passed himself off as an experienced "soda jerk", but had no idea of how to do the work.He surveyed the dirty soda fountain area, got cleaning supplies and cleaned all day while he observed the other man preparing the drinks, food, etc.At the end of the day, Joe knew "soda jerking" and Mr. Varner was delighted to have the food/drink area sanitized. As time passed, Mr. Varner offered to finance Uncle Joe's pharmacy training.Uncle Joe talked his way into Auburn University's (then A.P.I.) pharmacy school. He finished third from the top in his class - but couldn't be awarded a degree in Pharmacy because he had never finished high school! He was a licensed pharmacist, but not a graduate! He and another protegee of Mr. Varner's eventually bought the drug store, and Uncle Joe mentor many young men over the years, helping them with their college expenses as Mr. Varner had helped him.He was one of the best friends I ever had.At the end of his life he had become one of the wealthiest men in the town, and one of the most caring, compassionate, generous, "low-key", kindly, unassumingmen I have ever known. |
