  Notes for Haden Matthew Prior:
Sources: Aunt Bebe and Aunt Pearl's notes; Also article from Rome, GA newspaper.
Held over 1500 acres of land at Prior Station, Ga (Polk County). Was successful farmer and business man. Refused to take sides in the Civil War, although his son John T. did enlist and fight for the Confederacy. John T., in newspaper interview, said his father thought it would be a serious mistake for the Union of States to be dissolved. Hayden's neutral position did not protect his property from the ravages of the Union army's raids and certainly did not protect him from being way-laid and murdered by what John T. called "carpetbaggers and scallawags" shortly after the end of the war. The newspaper interview details John's relentless tracking down and executing all six men involved in his father's murder. His pursuit took him even into Texas and Arkansas and lasted years. [All this is detailed in the article printed in 1898, which is an entire page in length. EMS has John Bruce Morrison's copy.]
