Notes for P
ATRICK SINNETT:
In 1773, twenty-one year old Patrick wandered into the harbor area just as a ship was preparing to embark for the colonies. Patrick had served seven years as one of the King's waiters and he had grown to find that service distasteful. He made his decision and boarded the ship that was to carry him westward to a new land.
At the end of the voyage, he was penniless in a land of strangers. He owed for his passage and was sold to Jacob Conrad for four years to cancel his debt.
Patrick was not yet finished with serving King George. Under Captain John Skidmore, once again in the service of King George, Patrick was in the Battle of Point Pleasant against Cornstalk. During Lord Dunmore's war, he was under the direct command of General Lewis.
In 1781 and 1782, Patrick fought again, this time against King George in the American Revolution for fourteen months. During those months, he served under Captains Ruch, McCoy, Huston, Smith and Coger. He also served under Majors Ruck and Darke. His generals were Washington, Wayne and Lafayette. He fought at Jamestown, Hot Water and Yorktown.
According to Don Norman, Patrick became an United States citizen on October 10, 1768, although this date seems to be at odds with the date of his birth and the other information we have found regarding Patrick.
In the old section of the King Knob Cemetery next to the church, there is a marker for Patrick Sinnett which was erected by the historical society although he is actually burried in the Patrick Sinnett Cemetery (aka Hulderman Ridge or Charles Moyers Cemetery) located at the southern end of Hulderman Ridge on the right side of the road leading to Indian Creek).

From the Revolutionary War Pension Application of Patrick Sinnett: ... Virginia, ... At a quarterly Court held for Wood County at the Courthouse thereof before the Commonwealth Justices of the State of Virginia and for said county on a Monday the 18th day of December the year of our Lord 1833 ... Present: James Beeson, Jonathatn Kincheloe, Barnes Beckwith, Henry Steed and Joseph Tomlinson, Gentlemen Justices. --- Personally appeared in open court before the Commonwealth and Justices of the Peace of said County now setting Patrick Sinnett a resident of the County and State aforementioned. Aged eighty years and upwards who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his Oath make the following declaration in Order to obtain the benefits of the Act of Congress passed June the 7th 1832. That he entered the Service of the U.S. under the following named Officers and served as herein stated. "I was hired as a substitute in a Company of Virginia Militia under Command of Captain George Rush and started from Rockingham County (now in Pendleton) and marched under said Captain Rush to Richmond Virginia and was stationed thereabouts until our Company was discharged which was upwards of three months. I do not recollect of any other Officers but of our own Company and I don't recollect the year. About a year afterward, I was drafted and marched from the same place under Capt. George Huston to Richmond and from thence to Williamsburg then back to Richmond. I was then taken sick and returned home in this tour. I was away about three months, but not quite that long in service. While we were marching and countermarching, Major Rucker was our Commandant, who had been a Lieut. in the regular service and was appointed a Major of our Militia. We had at this time a slight brush with the British Army and accidently wounded our (__________) by mistaking him for one of the enemy. Then at a place called Hot Water we had another slight brush with the enemy and drove them from their encampments. Afterwards, I believe in 1782, I was again drafted and went out under Capt. William Smith and marched to Hennesses Fort where I was stationed and served a part of the tour, how long I do not recollect, but it was a month or more at any rate. I was then discharged and went home. In this tour I was marched against the Indians. After or before this tour (I think before) I was drafted and served under Captain John McCoy for three months and was stationed at Tygarts Valley in Westfalls Fork. the whole tour no regulars with us. I was also drafted on another tour and marched under Captain Coger (his other name not recollected) I was then marched to Little York and was at the siege of Little York and taking of Cornwallis, the whole army being here engaged, but I do not remember the names of any of the regular Officers, but Gen'l Washington, Gen'l La Fayette and Gen'l Wayne. And at this siege I believe I shot the last man that was killed on the enemies entrenchment at the setting of the sun the night before Cornwallis sent out his flagg to surrender. I assisted in marching the prisoners to Fredericksburg and from thence to Falmouth where I got my discharge. I also remeber General Dart being there. I believe this given statement to the best of my recollection in the whole time I served the U. S. about 14 months and upwards including the 4 months I was engaged against the Indians under Captains Smith and McCoy. I have no knowledge of any persons now living by which I can prove my service except Zacharias Rexroad and James Keister whose certificates or affidavits I have procurred to accompany this application. My last tour against the Brittish I was drafted for months but was kept in Service and served 4 months before I got my discharge as above stated. I was born in Ireland in the year 1752 on St. Patricks Day as I have been informed by my Parents but have no recollection of my age. I came to America in 1773 and soon after I toured in a Company commanded by Capt. John Studmore under Col. Lewis and was at the Battle of Point Pleasant against Cornstalk headed by the Admirable and brave Col. Lewis after which I settled in Rockingham Va and remained there until about 18 years ago, except when in service and from thence I moved to this (Wood) County where I have lived for the last 18 years. ... I hereby relinquish every claim whatsoever to a pension or annuity except the present and declare that my name is not on the Pension Roll of the Agency of any State whatsoever.--- P.S. (his mark)
