| On June 26, 1872, James Bicknell, eldest son of Thomas Bicknell and his wife Maria Pellett, sailed from the Port of London, England on the S.S. Medway. With him were his wife Anne (Caplin) and their children James 10, Annie 7, Ellen 5 and Alfred 2. They were bound for the Port of Quebec in Canada where a new life awaited them in Hamilton, Ontario. Their son Harry was born in Hamilton in September 1873. On the thirty five day voyage to the Port of Quebec, James kept a diary. A relative told me of the diary and offered to share it with me some day. However, it seems to have disappeared with her death. How wonderful it would be to read James' account of the family's adventure on the sea. My research has traced the life and times of the Bicknell ancestors in England and their descendants here in Canada. At the age of sixteen I began to feel unsettled and lost. Eighteen years later I finally acted on that feeling and began to search for my lost parents. Using documents I found in a box in the closet of my adoptive mother after her death, I have retrieved the moment when a sleek limousine emerged from the dust of a gravel road delivering me to my new parents. The book follows that limousine back as I searched for my birth mother, taking me into mystery, intrigue and cover-up by the legal system but bringing me finally to a supper dance in the Crystal Ballroom of the historic King Edward Hotel in Toronto, where by chance my birth parents were reunited. The memoir is a story of loss and recovery but it is also a story of love, strength and redemption. CONTACT: mrosies@rogers.com for purchasing information. |
