Notes for P
HILIP SITTON, JR.:
Philip Sitton Jr., second son of Philip and Winifred Sitton, was born December 23, 1790, probably in South Carolina. On September 7, 1807, Philip married Mary "Polly" Blythe, daughter of Thomas Blythe Sr., and Elizabeth Champion. Four of their 8 children were born in North Carolina before they settled in Walker County, Alabama. I have names and birth dates of all their children, taken from their family bible and sent to me by one of their descendants.
Several years ago, I corresponded with Andrew Jackson Sitton, former mayor of Pyote Texas, a descendant of Philip Jr.'s son James. Mr. Sitton said that his grandfather, James Sitton lived in several states. He was practically driven out of Alabama because of his anti-slave sentiments and his feeling about the Confederacy. James was a farmer, iron-worker and a preacher, being a "Faith Healer". It was reported that people came to him, and he traveled many miles on horseback, to pray and "lay hands" on the sick. Philip Jr. and Polly probably died in Alabama, but their descendants are scattered throughout many states.

Notes for L
AWRENCE SITTON:
Lawrence Sitton was born September 11, 1794 in South Carolina, the fifth child of Philip and Winifred Bradley Sitton. Nothing is known of his early childhood, or of his education, but being the son of an iron maker, he probably went to work at an early age in his fathers iron forge. On December 25, 1812, Lawrence married Isabel Gillespie, daughter of John and Jane Harvey Gillespie of East Fork. Isabel was a sister of Mathew Gillespie that married Elizabeth Sitton, a sister of Lawrence. In the year 1832, Lawrence was baptized into the fellowship of the Beulah Baptist Church and the following year was ordained a deacon of the church. His membership was sustained in the Beulah Church until May 27, 1843, when he and his wife moved their membership to the Mills River Baptist Church. During the remaining 30 years of his life, he served the church in many offices, and was highly respected when death came on March 21, 1873, at the age of 79. His wife, Isabel, was born March 30, 1796, and she lived a Christian and exemplary life for many years. She was stricken with paralysis several years before her death, which occurred May 30, 1880, at the age of 84. Lawrence and Isabel are buried in the Sitton-Gillespie Cemetery at Mills River.
