  Notes for JOHN S. ALLEN:
From the Records of the Mills River Baptist Church

Sunday, October 28, 1862. "Brother M. Rickman was called to the Moderators Chair. The following preamble and resolutions were read and adopted.
Whereas God in his providence has seen fit to remove from this to another and better world, three of our Beloved Brethren (Viz), John C Reid, who died on the 7th July, 1862, William R. Meese who died on the 10th of August, 1862 and John S. Allen, who died on the 17th of August 1862, all of the 25th. Regt. North Carolina State Troops. During the last few years of their life, they lived most exemplary members of the Baptist Church, deeply feeling their Countrys wrongs, they responded to her first call, and went forth to defend her sacred rights, and in defence of these rights they sickened and died. We most confidently believe that no better men has fallen in defence of our rights, than the subjects of this notice. We therefore as a church do resolve, 1st. That in the death of those three Brethren, our Country has lost three of its best citizens and soldiers. 2nd. That the Mills River Church has lost three Pious, Zealous. and useful young members. 3rd. That we tender the bereaved and sorrowing families our deepest sympathy, and that we offer for their ill, the sorrows, the pains and the disappointments of this life and that they are now in that happy land where: "Sickness and sorrow, pain and death, are felt and feared no more." 4th. That a copy of this preamble and resolutions be sent to the families of the deceased and that they be recorded on the Church Book and a copy be forwarded to the Editors of Henderson Times and Asheville News with a request that they be published.

Notes for S
ARAH SITTON:
Sarah Sitton was born January 4, 1809, the eleventh child of Philip and Winifred Bradley Sitton. She was married January 29, 1828 to Merit Rickman, who was born August 8, 1812, the son of Jesse and Mary Trantham Rickman, and was a brother of Rebecca Rickman that married Sarah's brother Joseph. Merit and Sarah were both charter members of the Mills River Baptist Church. Merit was baptized in Mills River on July 20, 1833, and was appointed to the office of Deacon of the church on June 27, 1835. On the 24th of October 1835, Merit Rickman was given permission of the church to preach, and on September 24, 1836, he was given written license to preach and exhort where-ever his lot may be. On June 24, 1837, Merit Rickman was ordained at the Mills River Baptist Church, then on November 25, 1837, when Elder Robert Jordan resigned as supply pastor of the Mills River Church, Merit was elected to be the first regular pastor of the church, a position he held for the next 17 years. In addition to being pastor at Mills River, it is known that he was the fourth pastor of the Crab Creek Baptist Church, and for a time was pastor of the Cathey's Creek Baptist Church, the first church established in Transylvania County.
In 1855, Merit and Sarah Rickman, and their family of 13 children, moved to Macon County, N.C. where Merit became pastor of the Cowee Baptist Church, near Franklin, N. C. The following excerpts are from the Cowee Baptist Church minutes, pages 87 and 88. "In 1855, Elder Merit Rickman removed to Macon County, and in February of the same year was received, by letter, into the Cowee Church and on the same day became pastor, which union was sustained 19 1/2 years, and only severed by his death. Father Rickman often served the pastorates of several other churches, and also labored as Missionary of the Western North Carolina Convention for many years." Elder Rickman often presided with marked ability over the Salem and Tuckasiege Associations. He presided at different times over the Western Carolina Convention and also over the Western Convention. He was always simple and modest when clothed with such honors. Vigorous in intellect, an acute logician, sound in doctrine, he was one of the most able, laborious, and successful ministers of the region. His Christian life was exemplary, devoted and untarnished to its close. He entered into rest, October 3, 1874, age 62 years. His remains were properly interred in the Cowee Church Yard.
Sarah Sitton Rickman lived for over three years after the death of her husband. The church records state that "She was faithful to all her trusts till her death July 13, 1878." She also is buried in the church yard of the Cowee Baptist Church.
