Notes for E
DWARD SITTON:
Edward Sitton, son of Ambrose and Gracie Carter Sitton, was born in 1816. It is not certain where he was born, as this was the year that his parents left North Carolina and came to Georgia. Edward Sitton was well known in the Rabun County Valley. In 1838, he served as one of the volunteers that went from Rabun County to the Florida War. This military Service is commemorated by a marble shaft furnished by the Federal Government, which stands in the cemetery of the Baptist Church at Dillard, Ga. It bears this simple inscription:
EDWARD SITTON
BECK'S COMPANY
FLORIDA WAR
Edward Sitton was married February 15, 1852, to Mary "Polly" McAfee, daughter of Jordan and Sarah Roe McAfee. Edward and Polly were the parents of a son and six daughters. One of their daughters, Grace Elizabeth, born October 31, 1855, was married November 6, 1887, to the Rev. Frank M. Jordan, a well known Baptist Evangelist of the late 1800's. I have had the pleasure of being acquainted with one of their daughters, Annie Sitton Jordan (Mrs. Leander) Gillespie of the East Fork Community of Transylvania County, N. C. Annie Jordan Gillespie was a graduate of Meredith College, Raleigh, N. C., and was a retired school teacher. At the time of her death in 1988, at age 93, she was the oldest member of the Cherryfields Baptist Church in Transylvania county.
Edward's wife, Polly, died August 24, 1866, and Edward married her sister, Martha McAfee. Two children were born to this union. Robert E. Lee Sitton was born Nov 14, 1867, and was killed in a farm accident October 25, 1927. Margaret Isa Dora Sitton was born Jun 10, 1879, and was married to Russell Tatum Green. Edward Sitton died November 13, 1891, in Rabun County.

Notes for J
ONATHON SITTON:
Jonathon (John) Sitton, was born April 26, 1817, the son of Ambrose and Gracie Carter Sitton. He was grandson of Philip Sitton, Pioneer Iron-Maker of Western North Carolina. His parents left North Carolina and settled in Rabun County Georgia about the time he was born, so it is not certain whether he was born in North Carolina or Georgia. On December 29, 1842, Jonathon married Elizabeth Carolina Roberts at Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. She was the daughter of Augustin Clayton Roberts and his wife Mary Anderson Roberts.
In the 1850 U. S. census, John and Elizabeth and 4 small children were living in Cherokee County, N. C., as were Elizabeth's parents. John's occupation was listed as a blacksmith. By 1857 the family had moved across the state line into Polk County, Tennessee. In the 1860 census, the name was spelled Citton and John was listed as a carpenter.
Between 1860 and 1863, the family moved to Ellijay, in Gilmer County, Ga. It was there that their son, Lucillius Anderson Sitton, enlisted in the Confederate Army on March 1, 1863. After the war, Lucillius returned to Ellijay and married Fannie Virginia Foster on April 28, 1867. The next day, the Sitton's, Roberts, and possibly some of the Fosters, left by wagon train for Texas. Cholera struck the wagon train and the story is told that John Sitton lost half of his family at this time. The family Bible bears this out. Andrew Young Sitton had
died in 1853 at the age of six months, but the Bible lists the following under "deaths."
Walton E. Sitton died the 4th day of August 1867. Age twenty years,
five months and twenty seven days.
Elizabeth Caroline Sitton died the 7th of August 1867, age forty three
            years and thirteen days.
Nancy Caroline Sitton died the 7th of August 1867, age ten months
            and eleven days.
Laura Deland Sitton died the 10th of August, age thirteen years, one
            month and eight days.
Mary Ann Sitton died the 14th day of August 1867, age sixteen years,
            five months and 28 days.
According to the family story, they were buried on a low hill on the banks of the Mississippi River in Louisiana.
The earliest land record for John Sitton in Nacogdoches County was dated December 11, 1869. At this time he purchased 124 acres from Felix L. and Arbamisia Carnes for six hundred dollars in gold. This land was located eight miles north and 10 degrees west from Nacogdoches.
On June 27, 1870, John Sitton married Mrs. Elizabeth Frances Wade Whitaker in Nacogdoches County. She was the daughter of Irvin Green Wade and Barbary Ann Stevens Wade, and the widow of Captain William Champion Whitaker, who died during the Civil War. She had two children by her marriage, to Whitaker. John and Elizabeth were the parents of two children, a son and a daughter, both born in Nacogdoches County.
John died May 22, 1904, and is buried in the Rock Springs Cemetery, Nacogdoches, Texas.
Two Sitton brothers of Nacogdoches, Texas, descendants of Jonathon, came to visit me a couple of times and gave me copies from the Jonathon Sitton bible.
