ILSON GILLESPIE:
Wilson Gillespie, born Feb 15, 1828, was the fifth son , and eleventh child of Mathew and Elizabeth Sitton Gillespie. Wilson, like his father and four older brothers was a Gun Smith. Not much is know about his early life, but at the age of 21, Wilson married Rachel Taylor, daughter of Jeremiah and Margaret Rickman Taylor. On March 11, 1851, Wilson and Rachel gave birth to their only child, a son, William Harvey Gillespie. Fifteen days later, on March 26, 1851, Rachel Gillespie died, and William Harvey was taken and raised by his grandparents, Jeremiah and Margaret Taylor.
On May 12, 1852, Wilson married second, Malinda B. Underwood, daughter of Amasa and Nancy Leaster Underwood. Wilson and Malinda had five children, four daughters and one son. One of the daughters died at childbirth, and the son died when 14 months old.
Wilson was a member of the Mills River Baptist Church, and at one time was the recording secretary of the church.
Wilson left Mills River in August 1863, and with his brother Philip and two brothers-in-law, went to Tennessee and joined the Union Army. On October 1, 1863 at Knoxville, Tn., Wilson was assigned to Co. F of the 2nd. Regiment of the North Carolina Mounted Infantry Volunteers, to serve for 3 years or duration of war. His Civil War papers state that he was born in Buncombe County, was 35 years of age, 6 feet tall, dark complexion, dark eyes, black hair and by occupation, when enrolled, a farmer.
On November 24, 1863, he was reported sick at Tazwell, Tn. On January 15, 1864, he died at the hospital at Tazwell from Typhoid Fever.
His records show that he was never paid while in the Army, and several years later, his widow applied for, and received a small government pension. Wilson was buried in Tennessee, and his widow, Malinda, remained a widow for almost 50 years, she died May 21, 1921, and is buried in the Shaws Creek Campground Cemetery near Horse Shoe, N. C.

      In the matter of the claim for Malinda B. Gillaspie of Henderson County, N. C. claim for Pension No. 164053, widow of Wilson Gillespie, deceased, a private in company F, of the 2nd. Regiment, N. C. Mounted Infantry, U. S. Volunteers.
      Personally came before me, a clerk of the Superior Court in and for aforesaid county and State, Thomas J. Lester, a Physician of long standing and a citizen of the County of Henderson in said State of north Carolina, reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declare in relation to aforesaid claim that the date of the birth of the children of said soldier as follows:
Rachel A. Gillespie was born the 3rd day of September, 1853, Mary E. Gillespie was born the 17th day of March 1856, and Margaret J. Gillespie was born the 22nd day of March 1859. That they are all children of the said Malinda B. Gillaspie, widow of the said Wilson Gillespie, deceased; born in lawful wedlock and are still living with, and supported by the said Malinda B. Gillaspie. My recollection of the precise dates is supported by the family register of births kept in the family bible. There being no Baptismal record kept. The father holding to the Baptist persuasion, the children has never been Baptized. I have been their family physician from the time of their marriage to the present and was well acquainted with the deceased and know him to have been a sound and healthy man of good habits and character up to the time of his leaving the state to join the U. S. Army in Tennessee during the late war. The deceased had been previously married and the family record shows that he had one son by his former wife named William H. Gillespie, born the 11th day of March 1851, who is still living and remains with, and was supported by the said Malinda B. Gillespie for about one year after the death of the said Wilson Gillespie since which time he has lived with the relations of his deceased mother. The said Malinda B. Gillespie is yet a widow charged with the support of her own children.
      That I was present at the birth of the same in the capacity of family physician and has personal knowledge of the date as aforesaid births of Rachel A. Gillespie, Mary E. Gillespie and Margaret J. Gillespie, children of Wilson Gillespie and Malinda B. Gillespie, and I further declare that I have no interest in said claim, and am not concerned in its outcome.

      Malinda B. Gillespie, widow of Wilson Gillespie, deceased, petition for pension. On the 30th day of March 1869, Solomon W. Hamilton, a citizen of said county and state aforesaid, well known to me to be a man of good credit and standing in the community and whose statements are entitled to full credit and belief and after being duly sworn makes the following statements in the above case. Viz;
That he was orderly sergeant in Company F commanded first by Joseph Hamilton (affiants father) afterwards commanded by Lieut. Jennings promoted to commander as captain of said Company F, 2nd Regiment N. C. Volunteer Mounted Infantry, U. S. service. That affiant was well acquainted with Wilson Gillespie, a private in said company who died in Hospital at Tazewell Tennessee about the 15th of January 1864. Affiant is no physician but gives it as his opinion from his personal knowledge and associations with the said Wilson Gillaspie in the service and exposures in camp unavoidable on his part. That his death was brought on by exposures and service whilst in the service of U. S. That affiant did not witness the fall off the horse testifyed to by Lieut. Anderson, but understood from others that deceased did receive such hurt and he was suffering from chronic diarrhea contracted in service and did also learn form others that his death was probably hastened if not caused by the violent return or increase of that disease. But only knows these facts from others but believes them to be true and has no doubt himself but the said Wilson Gillespie did die from causes and diseases originating in the army whilst in actual service in the U. S. Army and on duty. Affiant further states that he has no interest in this claim for pension nor no interest in the matter one way of the other.

C. M. Pace      before me March 30th 1869 C. M. Pace, Clk. Sup. Court.

      Lankford Huggins being duly sworn by me, C. M. Pace, clerk of Superior Court of law in and for said County of Henderson and state aforesaid.
He, the said Lankford Huggins has heard the above testimony of Solomon W. Hamilton read and knows of his own knowledge that the facts set forth in that affidavit in the main to be true. The said Lankford Huggins was also a private in said Company F. 2nd Regiment N. C. Mounted Infantry, U. S. Service, and afterwards served eleven months as Master Sergeant. That he the said Lankford Huggins knew the said Wilson Gillespie in the said service when he was sound and well, and that the said Lankford Huggins and his nephew, O. M. Huggins went to the Hospital at Tazewell, Tenn and there found the said Wilson Gillespie in a helpless condition with chronic diarrhea. We remained in Hospital about two weeks and left the Hospital having got better. We left the said Wilson Gillespie in a very helpless condition unable to clean himself with the poorest chance for help and accommodations and we then thought he would die with that disease and partly for want of attention. Shortly after we left the Hospital, I heard that Gillespie had died. I am satisfyed that this disease that he died with originated in and was contracted in the army after he went into service. The exposure in camp and Hospital at times was great and hard and it was particularly so in the Hospital at Tazewell when we was there, and that I have no interest in this claim for pension.
                        Lankford Huggins

Sworn to and subscribed the day and date above written. C. M. Pace,

George Washington Underwood enlisted in the Union Army, October 1, 1863 at Knoxville, Tenn. and was assigned to Capt. Josehp Hamiltn's Co. F., 2nd. Regiment, N. C. Mounted Infantry Volunteers, State of North Carolina. His Army records describe him as being born in Greenville district, S. Isabella, widow of George, applied for a pension and was granted $8.00 per month in 1869 and continued to receive same until December 1877 when her name was dropped from the Pension roll on the grounds that the disease of which her husband died existed prior to his enlistment. After numerous affidavits, she finally got this pension reinstated and received it until her death in 1914. She continued to live at Mills River with her unmarried son, James (Jim) until her death.
