HILIP LAWRENCE SITTON:
Philip Lawrence Sitton, was born August 16, 1814, the eldest son of Lawrence and Isabel Gillespie Sitton. He was born on South Mills River, just a short distance from the site of the Sitton Iron Works which was operated by his grandfather, Philip Sitton, Sr. There is no record of Philip's early childhood or his education. At the age of 27, Philip Lawrence married Nancy Caroline Allen, daughter of William and Nancy Covil Allen, on January 6, 1842. Nancy was born April 13, 1825. Philip Lawrence and Nancy Caroline Sitton became the parents of nine children, the last being born four weeks after Philip's death in 1857, at the age of 42.
Philip Lawrence was a farmer, farming some of the fertile bottom lands of South Mills River. This land was later to become the home place of John and Minnie Sitton Gillespie, Minnie being a granddaughter of Philip. at the time of this writing, part of this same farm is the home of Glenn and Margaret Whitaker, Glenn being a grandson of John and Minnie Gillespie. In addition to farming, Philip Lawrence also operated a grist mill, using the same mill race that was used to operate the Iron Forge of his grandfather.
Philip's wife, Nancy Caroline Allen came to the Mills River area with her parents a short time before her marriage to Philip. She joined the Mills River Baptist Church on March 22, 1840, and remained an active member of the same for 69 years. After the death of Philip, Nancy Caroline Sitton remained a widow for some 24 years, experiencing many difficulties. She was left with the task of raising nine children, the oldest being 13 years old. Six and one-half years after the death of her husband, her youngest son, Philip Lawrence Jr., was found dead in his bed, only six years old.
In 1881, Nancy Caroline Sitton married a widower, Alfred R. Gash. After seven years of marriage to Mr. Gash, she was again widowed. She then lived with her son, Silas C. Sitton, until her death on April 25, 1909. Both Philip and Nancy are buried in the Sitton-Gillespie Cemetery on South Mills River.

Notes for J
OSEPH SITTON:
Joseph Sitton and his wife, Eleanor Orr, left Henderson County about 1848 with two small children. They settled near Ellijay in Gilmer County, Ga., where five more children were born to them. I have been acquainted with some of the descendants of Joseph and Eleanor, through their son Robert Jehew, and they all spell their name SITTEN. William Perry Sitton, son of Joseph and Eleanor, born 1850, was married to Sarah Cochran, October 8, 1871. In 1891, William and Sarah left Ellijay, with several other families, and settled in the Wauhillau community of Oklahoma. One of their granddaughters, Irene Sitton, born September 18, 1921, married Charlie Mankiller, a full Cherokee Indian. Their daughter, Wilma Mankiller, was elected Principal Chief of the Cherokee nation, being the first female chief of any major Indian tribe, and has been awarded many citations and awards, along with an honorary doctorate degree from the University of New England and one from Yale University.
