Bert J. Sitton Reports:
Children of PHILIP SITTON and WINIFRED BRADLEY are:

County, Ga..
3.ii. ELIZABETH SITTON, b. December 31, 1788; d. April 11, 1858, Henderson
County NC.

Unknown, Walker County, Al..
iv. JOHN SITTON, b. January 11, 1793, South Carolina; d. Aft. 1860.
Notes for JOHN SITTON:
John Sitton, born January 11, 1793, in South Carolina, was the third son
of Philip and Winifred Bradley Sitton. He came to Mills River with his
family when he was about 5 years old. I call John the "Elusive One",
because I have spent so much time and come up with so little. John
evidently married very young, as he is listed in the Buncombe County
census of 1820 with a wife, 4 sons and 2 daughters. In the 1830 census he
is listed with his wife, 6 sons and 3 daughters, so I know he had at least
9 children. He joined the Beulah Baptist Church of Henderson County, on
August 19, 1820, wife not listed, and was given a letter of dismission on
July 19, 1823. At one time he was a trustee of the Mills River Baptist
Church. In the 1850 Henderson County census, he is listed in the household
of Hodge and Sarah Huggins, of the Big Willow section, perhaps a
son-in-law and daughter. At one time John Sitton Sr., was excluded from
the French Broad Baptist Church for "Putting his wife away", but was later
re admitted to the Mills River Church, where he held membership until
1860. Nothing definite is known of John's children, but it is my belief
that George Sitton, born in 1812, and Philip Sitton, born 1814 and married
Cassandra Allion, are his sons. There must have been a John Jr., as John
is listed as John Sr. in the church records and land deeds. Philip Sitton,
born 1814, and his wife Cassandra Allison, left a large number of
descendants in the area.

Hi Paul,
Since I was last in contact with you, I have found out for sure who my elusive
John Sitton was.My theory was correct, he was the son of Philip Sitton
(1770-1843).John's wife, Susannah Bryant Sitton, applied for a pension in 1878
on John Sitton's military service in the war of 1812.I could never find
anything on John after the 1850 census, but his wife states in her application
thatJohn left her and their children about 1854 and went to California. They
received a couple of letters from him and he said he was leaving California to
go to Oregon and that was the last they ever hear from him and presumed he was
dead. When Susannah applied for the pension she was living in Union County
Georgia next door to some of her grandchildren. She was 83 years old when she
applied for the pension, so I don't imagine she lived too long after that.I
could not find her in the 1880 census records.
Several grandchildren of my Philip Sitton, wound up in Texas.Ihave
corresponded with several of their descendants, most of them are dead now.
Don't know as any of this will be of any help to you, but I had searched for
many years trying to connect the above John Sitton and his family to my line of
Sitton's and I had just about given up when I found the pensionrecords.

Hello Bert! Hope you are feeling well and your health is also well.
Bert, I am trying to gather as much information as possible on the John Sitton family you
refer to as "the elusive one"It seems he is the best bet to be my direct
ancestor as my Great Garndfather was John Bradley Sitton who enlisted in the
CSA on July 3, 1861 and was released from duty in Atlanta, GA in i862-63 with
injuries to his right leg.It is believed by my family that he made his way
back to Ellijay (Gilmer Co) Ga where he soon died.Stories my Grandfather
told support this assumption. He was most probably the son of John, Sr but my
Great grandmothers bible did not list a date of death for him. My Grandfather
said he died when he (James) was about three years old.
Do we know for sure he (John) died in NC? And, did you ever see a middle name
or initial for John? Either would tie it down completely, one way or the
other. There is even one trail which points to him having gone to CA and later
to Oregon state. Do you have information on this story?
Notes for Susannah Bryant: Re: Who was Susannah Sitton? b. 1795 Tenn. Susannah Sitton (b. about 1795) is believed to be the wife of John Sitton (b. January 11, 1793 South Carolina, d. after 1860 Henderson County, NC), son of Phillip Sitton (b. November 7, 1770, d. June 19, 1843) and wife Winifred Bradley (b. July 20, 1766, d. September 28, 1841). Susannah SittonÆs identity is unknown. Boyd McCrary (b. about 1750-1755 Rowan Co., NC; Buncombe County Will devised October 18, 1815, Proven March, 1819) and his wife Anna ôNancyö Merrill (b. about 1750-1760, d. 1828) had a daughter Susannah who was mentioned in McCraryÆs will of 1815. However, it is not known whether this is the same person or not. John and Susannah were probably married between 1810-1812. On the 1820 census of Buncombe County, NC (p. 96), the household of John Sitton contained 1 male 26-45 (1775-1794), 1 female 26-45 (1775-1794), 4 males under 10 (1810-1820), and 2 females under 10 (1810-1820). Ten years later, his household was enumerated on the 1830 census of Buncombe County, NC (p. 218) with 1 male 30-40 (1790-1800), 1 female 30-40 (1790-1800), 2 males 15-20 (1810-1815), 2 males 10-15 (1815-1820), 1 female 10-15 (1815-1820), 1 female 5-10 (1820-1825), and 2 males under 5 (1825-1830). In 1840, John Sitton was listed in the Southern Division of Buncombe County, NC (p. 170) with 1 male 40-50 (1790-1800), 1 female 30-40 (1800-1810), 1 male 15-20 (1820-1825), 2 males 10-15 (1825-1830), 2 males 5-10 (1830-1835), 1 female 5-10 (1830-1835), and 2 males under 5 (1835-1840). In the late 1840s, the minutes of French Broad Baptist Church indicate that John Sitton was excluded for ôputting his wife away,ö suggesting that they had separated. No evidence of a divorce proceeding has been found in the minutes of Buncombe or Henderson Counties. In 1850, Susanna Sitton was listed on the federal census of Buncombe County (p. 331B, Household 1867) age 58 born in NC, along with children Jane age 24 (1826) born NC, and John H. age 14 (1836) born NC. The John H. Sutton is probably identical with Joshua H. Sutton. It is unclear why his name was rendered as John. John Sitton was listed as age 51 (1799) in Henderson County, NC (p. 229, Household 204) residing in the household of Hodge Huggins age 23 (1827) and wife Sally age 22 (1828). It is not known if he was related to them or not. By 1860, Susannah was residing in Gilmer County, Georgia with her son Joshua H. Sitton age 23 born NC and his wife Hannah E. age 24 born GA. Susannah was listed as a 65 year old (1795) female born in Tennessee. Prior to 1870, she went to live in Union County, Georgia. She is listed in the 1870 Union County census (p. 7, Household 95) as a 75 year old (1795) midwife born in NC. Listed next door to her (p. 6B-7, Household 94) was Montraville Sutton age 25 M born NC, Sarah age 20 F born NC, Mary age 18 F born NC, and George Sutton age 16 M born NC. These were the children of George Sitton (b. about 1812 Buncombe County, NC, d. after 1860 probably Union County, GA). Researcher Bert Sitton of Hendersonville, NC believes that John Sitton and his wife Susannah were the parents of George Sitton (b. 1812, d. between 1860-1870; md. Sarah Swearingim), Philip Sitton (b. 1814, md. Cassandra Allison), and Joshua H. Sitton (b. 1836; md. Hannah E. Clonninger), as well as several others. Information on the Sitton family can be found on his website under the title ôDescendants of Philip Sittonö. http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/ftm/s/i/t/Bert-J-Sitton/GENE8-0001.html Re: Who was Susannah Sitton? b. 1795 Tenn. John Long Worth White Writes: I just recently ordered and received a Widow's pension file for John Sutton (Sitton) and Susannah Bryant. I beleive this information will shead some light upon Susannah Sitton in Union County, GA and from Buncombe County, NC. From Pension File # WC 30226 John Sutton and Susannah Bryant were married the 15th day of August 1811 in Buncombe County, North Carolina. They were married by Philip Brittian who was Justice of the Peace. John and Susannah were married in her father's house; her father was Benjamin Bryant, in Buncombe County, NC. They lived in Bumcombe County NC till 1851 when they moved to Gilmer County GA. He went to California in 1852; and then reportedly went to Oregon in 1855 o4 1856; since which they did not hear from John Sutton again. John Sutton Pension---Bounty Land was applied for in the year 1868 and he received the Bounty Land. John Sutton served in Cap Neals' Co militia. 13 Feb 1815 till March 1815 when treaty was signed. (War of 1812) Susannah's discription of him on the Claim of Widow for Pension: "about 6 feet high, light hair, hazel eyes. Complexion Fair. Occupation farmer. Residense in Buncombe Co NC, Age 21-years." in 1815. Affidavit of Joseph Reid was with John Sutton in Montazuma, California in 1855 and 1856. The last he saw John Sutton was in 1856 in Tuolnmna, CA. Then he heard that John Sutton was in Nevada City. Joseph Reid returned to Union County, GA in 1856. Affidavit of Lewis Queen states he lived in the same settlement in Buncombe County NC for 35 years with John and Susannah Sutton. Lewis Queen states he moved to Union County, GA about 1845. John Longworth White [email protected] Paul Sitton writes:It is now known that these refer to the same person. There are several points in common as well as conflicting information.John Sitton is the John Sutton (there is no mention of a death date) and it is certain that both Susannah's did have ties to Union County, GA and Gilmer County, Ellijay, GA.Bert Sitton who has been researching this person for 30 years agrees with this information.
