Dr. Merritt hadbeen a resident of the state of Montana from 1912 until his death.Prior to his arrival in Montana, Dr. Merritt was a graduate of the medical college of Illinois.When but a young man, he was president of the State Board of Medical Examiners for the State of IL.For a number of years, he practiced medicine in Alton, IL.He was considered one of the best physicians and surgeons in that state.He was highly recommended by the Mayo Brothers of Rochester, MN.Different ones who went to that great hospital from the MT vicinity were usually asked the same questions by the famous physicians, "Why don't you let Dr. Merritt attend to this case?You have an excellent doctor at Sweet Grass you could so as much good as we can."
Dr. Merritt was married 3 times.At the age of 20, he married his first wife sho died a year later.A few years later he was maried to Dr. Nina Merritt. and for some time they had charge of the Alton Hospital in Alton, IL.In about 1920, they were divorced.Six or eight months later, Dr. Merritt married Mrs. Eva Karel of Sweet Grass, MT.
Dr. Merritt was a member of the Masonic, Elks, and K. of P.Orders.His parents still reside in Alton, IL.
Dr. Merritt was only sick for a few days before death.He refused to have medical attention until it was too late, and he passed away at 3:30 on November 27, 1922, which was his birthday.

Eva Black first married Edward Karel.They lived in Green River, Wyoming.Edward and his brother got into an argument and shot each other to death.Eva recalls feeling like "Liza escaping across the river" as she fled to their neighbors with her three young daughters.After Edward's death, Eva returned to Sweet Grass, Montana.
