Notes for MICHAEL SKAGGS:
Michael must of been in a fight with someone in Indiana before he left to move to Missouri. The following was found in the Henry County Court records.

Henry County, Indiana
Circuit Court Day Book
September Term 1821
March Term 1830

State of Indiana vs. Michael Skaggs Indictment for Assault and Battery

And now at this day comes as Will what comes who prosicutes the pleas of the state as the said defendant and it being demanded of him How he will aquit himself of the charges in the said indictment for plea there to says he is not gulity. And there upon Michael Swope acknowledges himself to owe and be indebted to the State of Indiana in the sum of Forty dollars if defendant be made in the condition following to wit that the said defendant do be and appear before the judges of this court on the first day of thier next term to be held in at the court house on the second Monday next to be average, a bill of indictment for an assault and battery and not depart then or withdraw here.

As far as I could tell the charges were dropped or Michael won because he served no time and paid no fine. As to who he fought with, this too is a mystery. No record is intact that states what happened.

After the death of Michael Skaggs his heirs were taken to court in Platte County to settle his estate. He seams to of died without a will and oweing more money than his property was worth.
