Notes for PATRICK CUNNINGHAM:
LINE OF THE CUNNINGHAMS
A.D. 572 Nebuchadnezer subdues Egypt, whereupon Scotta, Queen daughter of Egypt, with Esserhad, heir King of Syria, who had intended by marriage to unite the two kingdoms, took shipping and sailing for unknown regions.
They landed on an uninhabited island, and in memory of Scotta, named it Scotland. From there came the Scottish clans. Their third oldest son, by his skill and stratagem, saved them out of eminent perils and dangers. He was called "Cunningham". From him came the Cunningham clan.
In A.D. 1603, when the crowns of England and Scotland were united by King James 1st, the English paid the Scotch a large sum of money, which being divided was only four pence each. Patrick Cunningham, the leader of the clan, said "we have sold our King for a groat" and in anger left the country and went with his family to Ireland, at the age of 44 years, where they lived for the five succeeding generations.
After the Irish rebellion and massacre of the Protestants, John Cunningham, with his family, moved to America shortly as soon as his father was dead in A.D. 1737.
