Notes for J
OHN HANCE:
"A family tradition that there was an earlier John Hance in Maryland than the above while not impossible is improbable. It may have arisen from a wrong interpretation of a chart circulated in 1860 by J. Owen Dorsey. The first John Hance it refers to was probably of England which view is supported by Benjamin Mackall Hance writing of his father, Thomas Claire Hance, in which he says, his father was 6th generation from John Hance, a London merchant. No documentary evidence can be found of an earlier Hance in Maryland than the one here mentioned.

The immigrant came to Maryland in 1659. He had 3 wives as shown above. A chart to show more particularly the earlier generations was made by Charles Thistlewaite, Macedon, New York for Benjamin Mascal Hance in August l937."

(note: the spelling of Mascal --- Mackall is in the rest of the genealogy)

(Quote from the research done by those before --- Charles Thistlewaite, in 1937,
and two uncles (Thomas) Claire Hance and (Benjamin) Frank Hance in 1960's and 1970's)

Notes for B
ENJAMIN HANCE:
On the Lists of Taxables of Calvert County, Maryland, dated 1733, Benjamin lived in the area called Hunting Creek Hundred. He had 26 slaves. He was the 2nd largest owner of slaves in Calvert Co. at that time.

By 1753, Benjamin Hance owned one of the largest plantations in Calvert County, Maryland. It was called "Overton" . The location of this property was located on the main highway between Huntington and Prince Frederick. Also he owned "Parker's Clifts", "Warrington" ( acquired from the estate of his first wife Sarah and step-son, Basil Waring), "Agreement", "Bussey's Garden", "Tillington", "Hance's Lane", and "Chittam". This estate consisted of between l500 and l620 acres of land. Most of this estate went to Samuel, which in turn was passed on to his son, Benjamin by the year 1800.

WILL of HANCE, BENJAMIN, Calvert Co. drawn 20 May l773, probated 7 Dec l773

Notes for M
ARY HUTCHINS:
Mary Hutchins is not mentioned in her husband's will so she must have died before his death in 1773. In Mackenzie's book "Colonial Families of the United States of America" there is reference to a "Samuel Thomas of West River, MD., b. circa 1655; d. before 1743; was a minister of the Society of Friends: married at his own house at West River, May 15, 1688, Mary Hutchins, d. July 1751; daughter of Francis Hutchins of Calvert County, MD."

source: Hutchins, Ailene W. "Hunting Creek Hundred" self published. 1992.
In a book by Ailene W. Hutchins, "Hunting Creek Hundred", on page 319, it states that "In 1711, at the House of Richard Johns, Benjamin Hance and Mary Hutchins announced their first intention to marry."

When the Quakers first settled their Monthly Meetings were held at the homes of their leaders.

??? -- The Samuel Thomas was a leader of the Quaker Church and probably married Benjamin Hance and Mary Hutchins at his home. The date of May 15, 1688 could have been her birth date and July 1751 seems a reasonable date for her death.
