Notes for J
OSEPH BRIGGS:
The following information was provided by Tamara Wood:

Joseph came to Virginia with John Briggs. They paid their first taxes in 1787. Joseph, with his wife Rosemary, took out land and settled near Reed Creek about 15 miles northwest of Franklin on the Reed Creek Road. Briggs Run flows along the front of the grounds where the house used to stand. A forest close by still abounds with deer and other wildlife.

The old homestead is now owned by Irving Lantz. Mr. Lantz told us that the old buildings of Joseph were all gone and that he and his father, who are carpenters, have rebuilt all the buildings on the original site. Joseph had acquired considerable land of which some can be found in Blackthorn Township. At the time of his death, the sons had left Virginia and settled in Ross County, Ohio, or had gone on further west. He was living alone in the log cabin, with one slave however, at the time of his death.

Mr. Lantz and his brother told us where Joseph's grave could be found. We found a small mound covered with blooms of scarlet fire weeds. They are the only marker.

The following is from a family history book, source not known, and accuracy not yet verified: "Joseph Briggs, immigrant from England, was probably born about 1740 and died in Pendleton Co., Virginia (now WV) in about 1808. He was married to Rosemary ??? and according to family stories, fought in the Revolutionary War. Also, according to family tradition, he was a good friend of Francis Marion (the "Swamp Fox")--that's how Marion came to be a much used name in the family. My (the author-Tamara Wood) first actual proof of Joseph Briggs in this country comes from an abstract; Joseph Briggs had 45 acres on the South Branch of the Potomac in Rockingham County, Virginia , surveyed on October 26, 1773. Then, in 1784, Joseph Briggs was listed as the head of family for 7 whites in Rockingham Co.
