Welcome to my family home page! My approach to my family tree has been pretty much to work anything that gives on both my paternal(Skroch) and Maternal(Steen/Halvorson). However, I would really like to nail down when and how the my Skroch group came over and learn more about the conditions in Prussia(Silesian Poland) at the time leading to their decision to come over. And after being at a funeral at St Peter&Paul’s in Independence Wisconsin over the weekend, I left wanting to confirm stories I’ve heard about the Skroch’s involvement in the building of this beautiful Church. From contacts made through this site and other internet research I now have a pretty complete Skroch family tree going back to the early 1800’s and tentatively into the 1700’s. This family group originated in and near Popielow, Upper Silesia, Poland (at that time Prussia) Part of my ancestor group immigrated to the United States around possibly as early as the mid 1860’s and others as late as the early1880’s. They settled in the town ship of Burnside near Independence, Wisconsin. There is another group of Skroch’s that settled in North Dakota. On my mother's side through my Grandfather (Ernest Steen) I was lucky to have received quite a bit of linage information from my maternal grandfather (Ernest Steen) on his mother (Mary Stulien-Knutson -Steen) and grandmother (Elisa Staff/Skrefsrud). One of these branches leads to a sister (Anna Skrefsrud/Staff) of the Lutheran Missionary Lars Olsen Skrefsrud. On the trail on my Grandfather's, Grandfather’s (Peter O. Steen) has gone cool because there was a name change from Olson to Steen when they came to America. There were too many Olson's around, so they changed their name. Grandpa told me in Norway the farm that they came from was the Stone farm and the Norwegian “Stone” is “Stenen” which became Steen when they came to America. This is what Grandpa told me, but I’m not completely sure this is correct. I have other information that indicates that they may have had the Stenen name in Norway, not Olson. I do know they first settled around Mindoro, Wisconsin and Peter and Elisa Steen are buried there. I use FTM as my repository for the family tree information that I’ve been gathering. I also have been scanning pictures to put out on this site and for family archiving. The names and dates are nice, but if you have additional information - short stories or antidotes about our ancestors please contact me. These fill out the family history and give it life. I’m especially interested in details about the journey to America and the first years here. I have a lot of linage, a few pictures, but not much else to fill in the story. Of course if I post something here that doesn’t look right to you or if you have problems with the site, please let me know right away. You are free to download from this site; this information is intended to be shared by family near and far. If you send me something that you do not want posted on the site, please let me know – I will respect those wishes.
