I am researching the Slevin Family of Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo, Ireland, and their descendants. Michael Slevin and Jane Gilmore, (Michael's wife) are my current starting point. Peter, one of their sons (b. October, 1867), migrated to the United States sometime before 1900, which is the year his son, my grandfather, Edward, was born. I have been told that some of the Slevin's came to America in Boston, and that some of them, as Slavin's, were New York City policemen.Ned (Edward) Slevin, probably an uncle of Peter, was a hedge-school master (a former seminary student who taught Irish Catholic children who weren't allowed in the Protestant schools. He may also have been associated with Parnell and spent time in jail with him. (The geneologist in Ballinrobe has some police records mentioning a Ned Slevin).
I would be grateful for any information and glad to share what info I have.
