Although wheat-raising was his chief enterprise, in was also interested in raising stock.
James Stewart Lewis had lived in Missouri where he was a farmer before coming west . They came by the Fort Independence, MO., Salt Lake and Truckee route and suffered great hardship on the way, being six months in coming instead of the three they bad planned. They lost most of their stock, and had to abandon one wagon. They left Fort Independence in May, 1853 and he and his wife and three children arrived at Stockton on Oct 4, 1853 and camped under an oak tree 6 miles out of Stockton. Will written 7 Mar 1873 -probated 30 Aug 1873
lst Lawful debts to be paid
To my beloved wife the land and appertainces situate in Stone Co., Mo....at her death to be divided equally between my children, namely Jane McDowell and Mariann Lewis and Sary Stubblefield and Samuel K. Hobbs and James Hobbs with the exception of $10 each to my two grandchildren namely Mary Jane Moore and Anelisa Moore. I consider the rest of the heirs has had an equal share.
Not sure where Abner and his wife are buried. There are 25-50 graves at the old Hendrickson School nearby but none documented, one verbal recollection was that there were a couple of graves on the Hobbs farm and it is suspected they might be for Abner and Anna.
