2. GILES² SLOCOMBE (PHILIP¹) was born September 28, 1623 in Old Cleeve, Somersetshire, England, and died 1683 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island. He married JOAN COOK Abt. 1640 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island.

Notes for GILES SLOCOMBE:
Giles was an early settler in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Probably among the first in 1638. His name first appears in the mutilated records of that township in a land grant showing his"peacable posssession" of land there in 1648. (The Slocum Genealogy, by Charles E. Notes for JOAN COOK:
She raised her children as Baptists, but about January of 1674, Giles, Joan, Giles Jr., and two other family members were excommunicated from the Baptist Church. After leaving the Baptist Church, the Slocums became Quakers and in doing so, Giles recorded the births of all of his children in the Friends' records though several were now grown, married and living in distant parts.
