Cover Letter
[August, 1978]
[Dear Cousins,]
My, I was happy to see the Scott letters again. The last time I wrote was Dec. 3, 1976. I am getting them off to Marian Towne.
I haven't made headway with the Scotts or Smiths, but am enclosing what I have.
It is true, the Mormons have collected records all over. There are some Mormons here in the Geneology Society, but I didn't make out the right forms, so got nowhere. They are trying to prove everyone in the world is related, and to bring them all into the Latter Day Saints Church.
I have a book on the Corbetts; Theresa got one when we lived at Canyon Lake, and I sent one to the D.A.R. library in Washington D.C. Pay $5 and send to Mrs. Melvin Corbett, 77 Commerce St., Box 274, Clinton, Conn. 06413.
Grandpa Scott's Corbet cousin went all through the East, and collected Corbett history. I corresponded with her [daughter] and got most of this. A birthday card I sent her in January was returned. I humbly apologize for the looks of some of these pages. It's a long story! And in 1967, some pages yellowed, as you see.
If anyone is planning to join D.A.R., it will be best if you use my number as reference--373296.
I have the tintype of your Grandfather Scott and mine [William Albert Scott]. Did I send one before?
To go back to the Corbett book--Melvin Corbett died, and his wife has so many of the books. Hope she is still living!
[Also,] it is hot again today. I like it high and dry! Last winter we had an unusual amount of rain--22 inches. Now weeds all around are high and dry. We usually get 9 - 13 inches.
I am treasurer of the Mayflower Society here, which covers all of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, and recently realized I just belong through Jane Cooke to Francis Cook. There is another line to [Francis] Cooke through daughter Mary, then another line to Thas. Rogers. So I got papers and am establishing all three lines. Mayflower is putting out books of five generations of each one who left descendants, so many more can join.
[Written on the left margin, without identification, perhaps referring to Jane and Francis Cook:] They both were in Rev. Robinson's church in Holland.
Best to all of you--Love, Ethel

There is some confusion over Eldad Corbet's relationship with Miss Hannah Stearns; however, it is probable that these two were never married. The confusion comes from their filing with the Town Clerk of Mendon, MA on July 20, 1775 an "Intention of Marriage." This intention was apparently never followed-through. Three years later, an "Intention of Marriage" was filed by Edmund Bowker and Miss Hanna Stearns with the Town Clerk of Mendon, MA on July 30, 1778. Mr. Bowker and Miss Stearns were married on August 27, 1778. Reference: Russ Emery

Corbett Family History
(Corbet, Corbit, Corbitt, Corbett)
by Ethel Bush Strosky, 1970
Roger de Corbeau
The French from Normandy went to England in 1066 with William the Conqueror. Their standard-bearer was Roger de Corbeau, and from him descended Robert Corbett.
Robert Corbett
Robert came to America after the death of Cromwell, and settled in Weymouth, Mass., and later in Woodstock, Conn. In 1675 and 1676 he fought bravely in King Phillip's War. Robert married Priscilla Rockwood, and they had two children--one of them, Dr. John Corbett, born 12/7/1683, left descendents.
Robert married Abiel --- [his second wife Abiel Twitchell] in 1690. On 2/15/1691-1692, they had Demaris, and later Daniel, from whom we are descended. Robert was born about 1630 and died, according to [Milford, Mass.] Congregational Church records, on 9/18/1695.
[After Robert's death], Abiel (or Abigail) married John Bugbee. Woodstock records show they [Abiel and John] both died in 1744.
Elder Daniel Corbett
Son of Robert, he was born 12/29/1693 in Woodstock, Conn. He married Sarah Jones on 12/4/1717. Sarah's brother was Abraham Lincoln's ancestor [it was apparently Sarah's Aunt (also named Sarah Jones) who was Abraham Lincoln's ancestor--see the section titled "Common Ancestry with Abraham Lincoln"]. Sarah was born in 1694. They lived in Bellingham and later Milford, Mass. He was made an elder in the church in 1749, and he died in 1753, leaving nine children. His will mentions property and also a negro boy who was to have his bed, bedding, axe and hoe, and be freed when Sarah was gone. She married John Sawin in 1755.
Deacon Daniel Corbett
Son of Elder Daniel, he was born 7/8/1720. He married Mary Holbrook on 11/4/1741 in Bellingham, Mass. he died in Mendon, Mass. in 1761. Records speak of Daniel Corbet and his chain--he was a surveyor. they had 11 children who lived. Mary married Lt. Josiah Chapin on 2/2/1770, and she lived until 11/7/1809. Her Holbrook family will be found later [i.e. their geneology is described later in this document, in the Holbrook section].
Eldad Corbett
Born in the north purchase of Milford, Mass. on 3/3/1752, and died in Bridgewater, Oneida County, N.Y. on 11/1/1831. He served in John Brown's Militia in the Revolutionary War, [and fought at Bunker Hill]. He [filed an Intention of Marriage with] Hannah Stearns in 1775, [but apparently did not marry her]. Sometime before 12/1782 he married Lydia Barre, whose family lived in New Braintree, Mass. Lydia was born 10/26/1758 and died 1/13/1829. Matthew and Elizabeth Bell Barre were her parents and were married in 1750. Aaron Bell was her father. Eldad and Lydia are buried in Fairview Cemetery, Bridgewater, N.Y.
Arza Corbett
Born 10/9/1790 in Mendon, Mass., and died in Villenova Twp., Chautauqua County, N.Y. on 3/10/1866. He married Flora Wright before 1814, probably at Litchfield, Herkimer County, N.Y.. Flora was born 1/12/1794 in Duchess County, N.Y. and died in Villenova on 3/13/1838.
Marian Corbett
Daughter of Arza, she was born 4/28/1827 in Villenova Twp., N.Y. and died 3/5/1902 in Poynette, Wisc. She married Smith John Scott on 10/23/1850. He was born 3/26/1823 in Cherry Creek, N.Y., and died 3/27/1905 in Poynette Wisc. they are buried in Lowville Cemetery.
Smith John was a scout for a wagon train from Chautauqua County, New York to Columbia County, Wisconsin. He said his best meal was from an old Indian who pounded out corn cakes and cooked them on a stone.
William Albert Scott
[Son of Smith John Scott and Marian Corbett], he was born 4/26/1853 at No. Leeds, Wisc., and died at Grandview, Washington on 12/16/1944. He married Malansa Jane Blanchard, [also known as] Lanta Greene, on 11/30/1876 at Leeds Center, Wisc. She was born 1/1/1858 at Fort Ann, N.Y., and died at Hutchinson, Minn. on 11/24/1909.
About 1912, Will married Mrs. Grace Osgood.
Will and Lanta's children:
Elliot Bertram Scott, born 9/28/1877 in Columbia County, Wisc., died 2/12/1964 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Stella Ethel, born 12/8/1880 in Nuckolls county, near Edgar, Nebraska, died in South Gate, Calif. on 9/21/1953 and was buried in Minot, N. Dak.
Fanny Mary, born 12/17/1886 in Columbia County, Wisc.

Of course I remember things mother [Marion Corbett] talked about. She taught me two songs that her mother [Flora Wright] taught her. She also told me things about her mother's [Flora Wright's] sickness--she developed consumption right after Uncle Sylvanus was born, and died when he was a year old. The last three months she was not able to turn herself in bed. She also spoke of an Uncle and Aunt who used to come there during her sickness. I don not remember so many Uncles--Daniel sounds the most familiar. And she got some letters from her father since I can remember. The Haights may have them. She used to say that Spring always made her feel sad, because her father died then. You see, I have been away from home almost 60 years with no one to whom I could talk about them, so I have forgotten
Marian Corbett, daughter of Arza and Flora (Wright) Corbett, was born 4/28/1827 in Villenova, Chautauqua County, N.Y. She married Smith John Scott on 10/23/1850 in Lowville, Columbia County, Wisconsin. To them were born [five children, as follows]:
Luella Betsey Scott 1/12/1852
William Albert Scott 4/26/1853
Elliott Corbett Scott 12/17/1854
Helen Flora Scott 3/15/1860
Stella Eliza Scott 5/24/1866 died 3/5/1907
Luella Betsey Scott married Ambrose Eynon of Preston Lake, Minn. on 10/17/1874 at Leeds, Columbia County, Wisc.
William Albert Scott married Lanta Greene, Leeds Wisc., 11/30/1876
Elliot Corbett Scott married Jenette [sic] Howe of/at Lowville, Columbia County, Wisc.
Helen Flora Scott married Elmer Haight of Lowville, Wisc., 12/24/1884 at Leeds, Wisc.
My father was a French Huguenot, and I think came over to the U.S. during the 17th Century [her father was Smith John Scott b. March 26, 1823 in Cherry Creek, Chatauqua Co., NY. She may be referring to her grandfather, John Scott. A Huguenot was a member of the Reformed or Calvinistic communion of France in the 16th and 17th centuries; a French protestant-- American College Dictionary, Random House, NY 1964.]
My husband, Ambrose Eynon, son of Watkin Eynon, was Welsh, and descended from Prince David of Wales.
William Albert Scott married Lanta Greene, whose ancestors came over on the Mayflower by the name of Howard & in line with ex-President William Howard Taft. When her Aunt Martha Jones was 80 years old, her daughter Mrs. Josephine Low got up a postal card shower, and William Howard Taft (then President of the United States) sent her a card.
Elliott Corbett Scott married Jeanette Howe, whose father was Oliver Cummings Howe, and an ancestor was a member of the first Colonial Congress of the United States. Oliver Cummings Howe was at one time a member of the Wisconsin Legislature , and was by education a lawyer.
Helen Scott's husband James F. Robinson studied law and is the wealthiest one of the family, living at Laguna Beach, CA. He passed the law examination with the best grades of anyone in Madison.
Stella Scott's husband Elmer E. Haight was at one time a member of the Wisconsin Legislature.
You asked about the name 'Elliot.' I think it was one they liked. Aunt Aurilla's son was named James.

Abraham Jones was born about 1630 in England, and married Sarah Whitman, born about 1635. Abraham was made a Freeman in 1673, and a representative in 1689. His will was dated Jan. 8, 1717. Sarah Whitman's father was John Whitman, who was born in 1602 in England, and died at Weymouth, Mass. on November 18, 1692. John first lived at Dorchester, Mass., then at Weymouth, Mass. John was an Ensign in 1645.

William Holbrook of Glastenbury (ca. 1562-1625/26) is the earliest proven ancestor of the family, though it is probable, and reasonable to assume, that he was a son of Thomas and Constans (Thayer) Holbrook. Thomas Holbrook was born about 1538, and was perhaps descended from the de Holbroks of co. Suffolk (the records are fragmentary). In co. Suffolk, a John de Holbrok was a principal in a pleading at Trinity, concerning a presentation to the church at Holton, co. Suffolk, in 1382. John was the son of Thomas de Holbrok. Thomas was the son of John de Holbrok, who died 12 October 1316, leaving a widow Petronilla. This John was the son of Sir John de Holbrok, who died on 6 December 1306 leaving a widow, Alice. Sir John was the son of Sir Richard de Holbrok, who died on 27 February 1291 leaving a widow, Isabella. Sir Richard was the son of William de Holbroc of Lincolnshire, found on the Hundred Rolls early in the thirteenth century.
A Thomas Holbrook of Wimborne Minister, co. Dorset, had a daughter, Isabella, and McMaster calls attention to the fact that Sir Richard de Holbrok's wife was Isabella, and he had several grandsons named Thomas. There was a Holbrook Parish in the Hundred of Norton-Ferris, co. Somerset, about half-way between Wimborne Minister and Glastonbury, but there the only records extant relative to the problem are the rolls for the period 1414-1461, and these are not very helpful.
1. Thomas Holbrook m. at Thornbury, Gloucestershire, 19 February 1560, Constans Thayer. Thornbury is only a few miles north of Glastonbury, Co. Somerset, which was probably the home of Thomas Holbrook. According the McMaster and Lord, it is quite probable that they were parents of:
2. i. William b. prob. Glasonbury, ca. 1562. m. Edith. William lived in the parish of the church of St. John the Baptist, Glastonbury, co. Somerset, England. The will of Thomas Coles of Glasonbury, dated 7 March, appointed a William Holbrook overseer (Weaver, 34). The burial of Edith Holbrook, 11 June 1612, may be that of his wife, but apparently this is not supported by evidence. William made his will on 11 December 1625, naming "clement Weaver ye elder, Thomas Tyley, and my sonne Thomas Holbrook ye yonger," and their uncle, John Holbrook. This will was proved 1 February 1625/26. The registers of the parish of St. John's, Glasonbury, are defective, but are reasonably complete for the period 1603 - 1622.
3. i. Joane, b. ca. 1587 m. 1st at St. John's, Nicholas Bennett, who was buried 22 March 1606; 2nd at St. John's 14 January 1609/10, Randall Gylles.
3. ii. Elizabeth, b. ca. 1590, m. at St. John's 12 September 1611, Thomas Tyly.
3. iii. Thomas, b. ca. 1594, m. at St. John's 12 September 1616, Jane Powyes (also Powyers). Jane may have died before 1677. In 1635, Thomas was of Broadway, co. Somerset (Weaver, 32), when he joined the Reverend Joseph Hull (Q. V.) and went to New England. There are three hamlets in Somerset named Broadway, and he probably lived in the one near Glastonbury. He settled in that part of Weymouth known as Old Spain, in Massachusetts Bay. In 1643 he was with Cheseboro at Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony, but he was a freeman at Weymouth in 1645. He was second member of a board of selectmen called townsmen in 1641, 1645, 1646, 1651, 1652, and 1654. John Holbrook [his son, 4.i.] was also a townsman for a time. This packet of information was received by Mrs. Gene Latta Slocum in August, 1978 through the "Scott letters," a round-robin tradition of the Scott family. Gene photocopied it and distributed it to her children, including her son Scott Steven Slocum. Scott retyped and edited this document in 1999. Editor's notes generally appear in square brackets--for example, the original sentence "I have the tintype of your Grandfather Scott and mine" was edited as follows: "I have the tintype of your Grandfather Scott and mine [William Albert Scott]" Minor changes were made for readability or clarity without editor's marks. Some original language that turned out to be incorrect is shown in strikethrough font. Other phrases and abbreviations were left as they were, for historical value; and some errors were undoubtedly introduced by the editor, himself.
