Generation No. 1
1.ANTHONY1 SLOCOMBE1 was born Abt. 1590 in Somersetshire, England, and died Abt. 1689 in Albemarle, North Carolina1,2. He married MARY HARVEY3,4 March 02, 1636/37 in England. She was born 1594 in Ashill, Somerset, England5, and died 1689 in Edenton, Albermarell, NC.
Notes for ANTHONY SLOCOMBE:
Provided by: Karen McEneaney Owen <karen@karen.tierranet.com:
One report has Anthony purchasing land and settling in Portsmouth Township in what is now Newport, RI, while another lists him as one of the first settlers of Dartmouth (now New Bedford, MA) in 1642. Reportedly, Anthony later moved to Abermarle, NC. A third report (info from Slocum family monument in Northville NY at Prospect Hill Cemetery) offers additional and, in some cases, conflicting info. To wit, Anthony was one of the first landowners in Cohannet (now Taunton MA) in 1637 and, by 1670, was Lord Deputy and Proprietor of Carolina, residing at Edenton in Albermarle County (now Chowan County, NC). This report puts Giles birth at 1638 in Rhode Island and lists a sixth child, John, who, like Joseph was born in North Carolina. The first John apparently died young in Taunton, MA.

Wesley & Mary Slocum family
This portrait was perhaps taken after Mary's death in 1911. Wesley is seated in
an armchair in the center, with a daughter on each side and a daughter and
three sons standing behind. The author knows very little about the daughters
(and would be happy to learn more). Arthur's wife Minnie and Carl's wife Carrie
are not included. Front row (left to right): Hattie, Wesley, and Laura. Back
row: Carl, Franklin, Beulah, and Art.

Scott Slocum's interpretation of the Iowa Census, 1895:
State of Iowa, Osceola County, Viola Township, May 29 1895, V221-211 p. 319.
Hattie Slocum was 26 years old and living at home May 29, 1895, born in IL. Women weren't entitled to vote in general elections then. If I read the census taker's notes right (he was a sloppy speller), these Slocums were Baptists. I'm assuming her name was Harriet, and have added her, Laura and Beulah to the family tree as sisters of Franklin, Carl and Arthur.
Their neighbor was Wesley's father, 85 year-old Roswell Slocum, a member of the Methodist church, born in NY. The census take was a very bad speller: Roswell's name might have been read as "Basel," "Rosull," or something like that. He wrote the surname "Slocom," and the first names "Wasly, MB, Hata, Carl, and Artar."

Scott Slocum's interpretation of the U.S. Census, 1900
U.S.A., State of Iowa, Osceola County, Viola Township, T623-451 part 1, page 280b:
The Slocum household in the summer of 1900 included Wesley, his wife Mary B., their two youngest sons Carl and Arthur, and two hired workers: Burt Johnson and Etta Rehms. Occupations were listed as follows: Wesley, farmer; Carl, farm laborer; Arthur, at school; Burt, farm laborer; and Etta, housekeeper.
Wesley owned the farm, free from mortgage. He and Mary had been married for 40 years, since 1860. They had 10 children, 7 of them living as of that date. Wesley and his parents were born in New York. Mary was born in Ohio, her father in Massachusetts, and her mother in Vermont. Carl and Arthur were born in Illinois.
Burt Johnson was 21 at the time of the census. He was born in Sweden in December 1879, and came to the U.S. in 1895, when he was 16. His record does not indicate U.S. citizenship. His parents were both born in Sweden. Etta Rehms was 20 at the time of the census. She was born in Iowa in June, 1880. Her father was born in Germany, and her mother in Iowa.
The census-taker had just been to the farm of Alexander Lowrie (b. June 1872 in Iowa) and his wife Kathie (b. Nov 1868 in New York). They were renting the farm. They had one infant son, Charles, and living with them were Kathie's younger brother and sister Wilbur and Jessie Herrington. Alexander's father was born in Scotland, his mother in Wisconsin. The Herringtons were born in New York. Their father was born in New York, and their mother in Pennsylvania.
The census-taker next went on to the farm of Patrick Piesley (b. May 1846 in Ireland) and his wife Mary J. (b. Dec 1850 in New York). Patrick's occupation was listed as a livestock dealer. Their parents were born in Ireland. In their household were two daughters, a son, a boarder and a farm laborer. Their elder daughter, Maria, was 24, born in Wisconsin. Their second daughter, Emma, was 22, born in Iowa. She had been employed 4 months that year as a school teacher. Their son D. L. was 15 years old and still in school. Their boarder, Mary McQuirk, 23, was also employed as a school teacher, also for 4 months. She was born in Iowa, her father in Ireland, and her mother in England. Their hired hand, Fred Lemmerman, was 32 years old, from Germany. He had come to the U.S. in 1892, and his record does not indicate U.S. citizenship.

Notes for ALICE SLOCUM:
Gene Latta Slocum remembers Alice fondly, from an semi-formal dance around December 1934, new year's eve, in Worthington, MN, in a large auditorium. Before arriving, Gene had asked people how to dress, and got the mistaken impression that it would be a formal affair. She had arrived early in Worthington, and had her hair done, etc. Doris Doeden, Gene's friend at the U of MN, a Worthington native, was home for the event too, and helped her to get the appointments. Everything was going well until Gene appeared in her long dress, the only one at the dance. She was feeling a bit out of place until Alice and Trudy met her near the door and came to her aid, with hugs and kisses, complements, and assurances. The rest of the evening went fine, now that she was at ease.
Alice got married and moved to Sacramento, CA. She and her husband had two daughters, maybe more. She and Gene exchanged Christmas cards for many years, until the mid 1990s. At that point, Gene lost track of her.
