Find Family

Bella Alberta Caird was born in 1917 in Southwold, Suffolk, England, she was my mother. She was the daughter of Charles Andrew Caird and Alice Harriet Revell, who were married in Willesden London in 1914.

'Adopted' at the age of 18 months, she was brought up in Glasgow, Scotland. Her new adoptive parents were Thomas Kelly and Mary, and they lived at 15 Braid Street, Glasgow. Mum was baptised in Glasgow, April 1919 when her name was changed to Mary Theresa Kelly. The only record she had of her 'adoption' was a handwritten note in pencil, with an address in what looks like Harrogate, England. The mystery here is, why would a couple from Glasgow come all the way to England to adopt a child? I will probably never know. Mum would never let me do any tracing on her family while she was alive.

When she died in 1995 I was determined to find her natural family. After researching for two years, ploughing through census records, births, marriages, and deaths, in both Scotland and England, and writing letters to anyone with the same surname, I finally made contact with her first cousin in England and a third cousin in Scotland. A wonderful moment.

This Home Page is dedicated to her memory and is about the family she never knew.

My husband's SMART line from Kirriemuir, in Scotland is also included.

They were a well known New Forest family, and there is a stained glass window in Burley Church to the memory of Charles, who was Church Warden for many years. We believe that Evemy is a Huguenot name and that they came to England some time in the 1600's. Charles is my 3 x great uncle, and I have contact with his great, great grandson. Through him I was able to find a book called Records of Burley, a New Forest village, now out of print, which is full of details about the Evemy family. Land records, house histories and lots of photos, which speak a thousand words.
