| I am researching the Smith, Prendergast, Markey and Longman branches of my family. The Smiths and the Markeys most recently came from London, the Prendergasts from Co Offaly in Ireland, and the Longmans lately from the London area but originally from the West Country. My Grandfather John 'Jack' Smith served in 34 Field Artillery, my father Joe Smith served in the RHA in Egypt from the 1920's until the late 1930's and rejoined at the outbreak of WW2 serving initially in the UK and from 1941 in Egypt, the majority of that time in the Military Police. After the war until his retirement in 1972 he worked in the civil service. My uncle George Arthur 'Smudge' Smith originally trained as a journalist before serving in the RAF. After the war he resumed his journalistic career and in 1957 emigrated to Canada. As for my grandmother Anastasia Smith (nee Prendergast) around 1900 she with several other members of her family emigrated to the USA and as far as we can establish was the only one to return to the UK to eventually marry my grandfather John Smith prior to 1907. |
