1860 Census, Image # 121:John and Ann McEvoy live in Grundy County, Morris City, Illinois with their son, 8 year old James, born in Ohio.John is 50 years of age; his occupation is "laborer"; he was born in Ireland.
July 17, 1860:From Grundy County Historical Society:
"Deed Record 8:116, (to clear the title--error was made in calling in Lot #4l),Indenture...between John P. Southword Special Master in Chancery.Appointed by the Grundy Co. court at the June term 1860 and John McEvoy & Daniel Dunn of Morris, Grundy Co (apparently James A. & Daniel bought Lot #3 in Blk #15 8 Dec 1859)(did not catch when the two of them were no longer in partnership of the lot)."

1862:From the Grundy County Historical Society:
"John McEvoy was still living November 1862 when he was a witness at a baptism.Grundy County did not record deaths until 1877 and then it was hit and miss until federal law required recording in 1916. Therefore, there is no death certificate for John McEvoy."

John must have died between 1862 and 1870.Ann and James are alone in 1870, living with the family of John Ford.Says that she is the home owner; however, Ford is stated as head of household.

1874:Deed Record 40:16, dated 10 Oct 1874, Indenture between Ann McEvoy (widow) and James McEvoy...and Herman C. Gifford...for $625...land situated in Morris...the undivided half of Lot #3 in Blk #15 in Chapin's Addition to Morris.

1888:Ann did have a death certificate. It says that she was a housewife & a widow. She died in Morris on 19 July 1888, age 74. She was born in Kings Co, Ireland & had been in the state of Illinois for 36 years. She died from acute dysentery which she had suffered for 6 days. She was buried in the North (Catholic) Cemetery where I assume John was also buried. This cemetery no longer exists. First it was abandoned because of a high water table. Then around 30 plus years ago, the road was widened, and most of the bodies were reburied in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Morris. There are no existing stones for John & Ann McEvoy."

Note from historical society:If you can find James E.'s marriage license, it should tell his mother's maiden name. His death certificate may or may not list his parents. It would depend whether the person giving the information knew, but in 1922, the names of the parents were included. I couldn't find a marriage for him in the Illinois marriage index, and I used Julia's married name of Murphy. I didn't find her marriage to a Murphy either.

Problems to solve:According to the above, Ann went Illinois in 1862.However in 1860, she is in Grundy with her husband and 8 year old son.John was in Illinois in 1856.James was born in Ohio in 1852.Did John move to Ohio and then return to Illinois???Is the James McEvoy mentioned above with John in 1856 his brother or father????Is the Daniel Dunn a relative???
