ORIS CARPENTER:
Doris was a graduate of Newport High School class of 1910. She went on to Galloway College in Searcy. He aunt Nellie Morris Brundidge took the money left by her father Wm. H. Morris and gave Doris the college education to become a teacher. Doris taught in several areas of Arkansas and passed the state examinations . She had been to Cincinnati Ohio to the Music conservatory to study also. She came to Flagstaff , Arizona for summer school to get an Arizona teaching credential. after teaching in Forst Smith for several years, she was offered more money and train ticket to Arizona. She accepted a position at Miami, Arizona, a copper mining town in the wild west in those days. She taught there and met Charles G. Bakaly a native of Kalamta Greece. They were married in Arizona in 1921. They spent their honeymoon in Chicago and returned to Arizona, but not long after they moved to Long Beach California where they lived for a number of years. Their son Charles G. Bakaly Jr was born there in 1927 at St. Marys hospital. She later moved to Pasadena, California and taught school there for many years and died in Pasadena in 1992.

Charles G. Bakaly (Bakalopoulos was granted citizenship and changed his
name to Bakaly. There is a record of an Athanasios Bakalouplos age 48 with 2
other men came to New York City, June 1, 1903 on the vessel Kroomland and they were from Greece. This would be about the age for Charles to come as he would have been 18. Probably the Bakalopoulos was a relative. Needs research.

CHARLES MORRIS6 CARPENTER (JESSE LEE5, THOMAS BRIDGEWATER4, JESSE3, JOHN2, THOMAS1) was born November 21, 1899 in Newport, Jackson, Arkansas, and died November 21, 1979 in Long Beach, Los Angeles, California. He married AGNES CATHERINE GIBBONS December 16, 1921 in Holbrook, Arizona, daughter of PATRICK GIBBONS and ELLEN MEAD. She was born July 04, 1895 in St. Mary's, Potawatomi, Kansas, and died February 19, 1969 in Long Beach, Los Angeles, California.

On U.S. Census of Jackson County Arkansas l900: l9l0: Morris Charles Carpenter was his legal name, but he like the Charles better and used that. Morris was born and lived in Newport , Arkansas until he was about 15 , when he moved with his Mother to Fort Smith, Ark Later he moved to Arizona where his sister Doris had moved to teach school. He worked for the State of Arizona Highway department as an Accountant and joined the U.S. Navy during last part of WW1 from Arizona. He served from 1919 to 1920 on the USS Kanawah an oil tanker as a yeoman. He spent some time in San Salvador, South America. He returned from service and was discharged in Arizona. He again went to work for the State and met Agnes Gibbons in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Agnes was from St. Mary Kansas and was in the west with her sister, Margaret Gibbons because of suspected TB in Margaret. Agnes and Morris were married in Holbrook, Arizona. They took the train there and were married. Soon after they moved to Long Beach, California. Doris Carpenter, his sister and her husband, Charles Bakaly had recently moved to Long Beach and so the whole family joined in the move. Charles and his Mother Savannah had been in Los Angeles and Monrovia, California earlier also and he had worked there in the bank in Monrovia. Charles stayed in Long Beach the rest of his life in the produce business at first and later working for pari mutual corporation. He is buried at all Souls cemetery in Long Beach along with Agnes his wife.

  Notes for PAUL WILBER SMITH:
Paul is a Medical Doctor, graduated from the University of California -Berkeley 1948 and University of California San Francisco Medical School 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Doctor during the Korean War and then practiced medicine in Long Beach California for 35 years in general practice. During WWII he had to interrupt his college at Carnegie University in Pittsburgh Pa to enter the U.S. Army Air Corps(now Air Force) and was commissioned a 2nd Lt in 1942 at Mather Field, Sacramento as a Navigator. He spent 4 years in service with combat of 25 missions over Germany . He was stationed in Nuthampstead, England with the 8th Air Force 398th Bomb Group.

From a letter in 2000 from Elliott , the radio operator on his airplane during WWI he confirmed the information about the stops I when they flew over from Bangor, Maine to England, the made a stop at Greenland called Bluie West One US controlled airport . They were running low on fuel due to headwinds and came in just about dark down a Fiord. Paul told me it was scarey. Then the next stop they made was at Klepcovik in Iceland. Then on to England.
